Baidu Gains Approval for Baixin Bank

One of China's e-commerce giants, Baidu, has obtained regulatory approval for Baixin Bank; follows banking sector business activity from competitors Alibaba and Tencent; the banking unit will be digital only, offering online banking, telephone banking, ATM and mobile banking services; Baidu owns 30% of Baixin Bank and will work in partnership with China CITIC Bank which currently owns 70% of the bank.  Source

Barron’s Reporting Investment Opportunity in China’s Huatai Securities

China's online brokerage market for retail investors is growing rapidly; Barron's suggests investment in China's Huatai Securities (6886.HK) which is one of the online brokerage market's best positioned companies; the firm is China's largest brokerage by trading volume and offers low commission rates; its business is also diversified with its wealth management unit increasing assets under management by 44% in 2016; Barron's cautions investors on the firm's earnings, with comparable net profit down 44% in the first three quarters however analysts are expecting an earnings increase of 21% in 2017. Big to Strong: China Fintech Entering a New Era

Though fairly young, fintech in China has really taken off the last few years as Yihan Fang, CEO of Yirendai explained in her LendIt USA 2017 keynote; when compared to other industries like insurance, fintech has shown a great deal of promise; payments have become widespread, online lending is growing steadily and new technologies like blockchain have taken off; this has allowed Yirendai to help the underbanked and create a credit data infrastructure; after a few high profile fraud cases the government has started to regulate the industry closely and the number of lenders has been consolidated; Yihan is optimistic about the future, she expects to be lending $15 billion per year by 2020 and hopes to increase the average assets under management of each high net worth investor on their platform.  Source

Bitcoin a Source of Income for Chinese Traders

Bitcoin trading has become a viable income source for many Chinese cryptocurrency traders; launched in 2009 the cryptocurrency has recently reached highs of over 8,000 yuan ($1,160.65) and is currently trading at around 6,600 yuan ($957.53); with a global worth of over $14 billion, over 90% is currently in yuan and Chinese investors are actively taking advantage of the currency's gains; investor Huai Yang is reportedly earning 1 million yuan ($145,081) per month from trading bitcoin; other investors have also reported steady bitcoin trading monthly incomes of over 40,000 yuan ($5,803).
