Chinese Fintechs Look to US Markets

Hexindai, a Chinese fintech company listed on the Nasdaq last Friday; according to the article Chinese firms are getting pressure from investors who want to cash out; tightening regulations are also a factor; Qudian, another firm went public last month and Rong360 may be the next Chinese fintech company to go public; Oliver Wyman reports that the market size for consumer lending will expand to $620 billion by 2020 with a compound annual growth rate of 49%. Chinese Firm Hywin Financial Acquires UK Wealth Manager Azure Wealth

Hywin Financial Holding Group has announced the acquisition of UK wealth manager Azure Wealth; Azure Wealth will change its name to Hywin Wealth and operate as a subsidiary of the financial holding company; according to Managing Partner Massimo Scalabrini, "All other management and operational responsibilities as well as our principles, ethos and investment management philosophy remain unchanged."; the acquisition will provide the UK-based firm with wealth management expansion opportunities in Asia; Hywin Financial Holding Group has over 20 wholly-owned and holding subsidiaries with over 100 billion Chinese yuan ($14.53 billion) in assets under management. Chinese Insurance Company Zhong An Planning for IPO

Sources report that Chinese online property and casualty insurance company Zhong An is planning for an initial public offering (IPO) in China; the firm was founded by Alibaba's Jack Ma, Tencent's Pony Ma and Ma Mingzhe from Ping An Insurance Group of China; a primary product for the firm is e-commerce shipping insurance which accounts for approximately 50% of the business; currently the firm's major shareholders include Ant Financial with 16% and Tencent Holdings Ltd. with 12%; in 2015 it reported a valuation of $8 billion and it currently plans to raise an additional 2 billion yuan ($290 million) to help it prepare for the IPO.  Source

Chinese IPOs Disappoint and Another Batch Coming

Last year’s batch of Chinese IPOs did not perform well and ended up losing almost $1bn worth of shareholder money; there is an expectation that the number of Chinese IPOs will jump 30 percent in 2018; Qudian, one of the biggest from a year ago, has seen their stock plummet by more than 50 percent; expectations and the Chinese government crackdown on online lending has really hurt the prospects of some companies looking to list.
