Gartner Report Provides Insight on Insurtech Investment

A research report on insurtech from Gartner says the majority of the world’s 25 largest insurance companies will invest in insurtech by 2018; 64% of these companies have already made significant investments in emerging insurtech companies and innovation; among the highest priorities for investment are digitization, digital customer management, mobile and analytics.  Source

Invoice Securitization Possible Using Blockchain

Applied Blockchain has been trialling a system for companies to process their invoices on blockchain and in turn will allow the companies to tap the securitization markets; the current trial is with a UK SME called Emplas that makes windows; "Our platform may now allow for securitization of invoices as the underlying for bond issues," Ben-Ari, Founder of Applied Blockchain, tells Euromoney; "It brings transparency as to the ownership and establishes the provenance of invoices for bond buyers in ways that the existing processes and technology simply did not allow."  Source

Lend Academy Article: KPMG and H2 Ventures Release the Global Fintech 100

The Global Fintech 100 list by KPMG and H2 Ventures has been highly publicized and is a leading point of reference for the global fintech market; Lend Academy provides insight on this year's list in their article; the list includes companies from 23 countries with two groupings for established and emerging companies ranked by five factors; marketplace lending reported the greatest representation by category with 32 companies; by country China led the list with four of the top five rankings.  Source

Gender Gap Seen with Financial Savings and Financial Education

Financial Finesse writes about a gap that exists regarding women accruing retirement capital and gaining confidence in personal financial management; causes for the gap versus men include less comfort with traditional means of communicating financial products in-person and online; women (therefore) being more conservative with novel asset classes; as well as women living longer and requiring more savings; the article reports that "the bottom line is that women need to be saving more and at a faster pace than men to meet their retirement income needs."; their survey finds that only 20% of women feel the financial sector "truly hears their needs."  Source

Wefunder is Accepting Bitcoin

Reg. CF crowdfunding platform, Wefunder, is now accepting Bitcoin; Wefunder has taken the lead on Reg. CF crowdfunded investments accounting for 33 of 46 offerings; after numerous requests from its investors the platform has been able to incorporate Bitcoin investments; says the acceptance of Bitcoin will make it even easier to invest in early stage companies.  Source

HSBC Has 3000 Staff Working on Innovation

HSBC has moved 3000 members of its staff into a new building and are viewing this digital group differently than their core suit-and-tie employees; the bank believes separating them out will better help to fuel new innovative ideas; HSBC CEO Stuart Gulliver said, "To survive for 150 years we've had to evolve. Most of the risk we've dealt with is political. Actually what's happening in the digital space is there is a threat, particularly to retail banking... in payments, in wealth management."  Source

Ant Financial’s Focus Still on Asia

Alibaba's fintech arm, Ant Financial, is looking to increase their Asian market share before taking on more expansion plans worldwide; while at an event in Thailand to launch a partnership with payment firm Ascend, senior company officials explained the current focus is on 370 million people in Asia without bank accounts; in addition to the Thailand partnership, the company partnered with India's PayTM last year and has secured licenses to operate in Hong Kong; according to Senior Vice President, Douglas Feagin, there were no set plans or venue for a potential initial public offering, though there were benefits to going public.  Source

Japanese Banks Join BlockChain Consortium with Ripple

SBI Ripple Asia this summer announced plans for a Japanese blockchain development consortia; now, it says interest from banks has been so high that they are launching in November 2016 with 47 member banks, as opposed to an originally planned launch in March 2017 with 30 banks; the participants will be working first on a proof of concept for real-time remittance and cross-border payments; participants include Mizuho, Bank of Yokohama and SBI Sumishin Net Bank.  Source

MasterCard Providing Blockchain APIs to Speed Payments Development

MasterCard has announced three blockchain APIs to accelerate independent developers' use of MasterCard's technology; the API sets facilitate implementing blockchain nodes/servers, defining 'smart contracts' using MasterCard's technical language and executing transactions on its 'Fast Pay' network; MasterCard is targeting applications in P2P payments, trade finance and supply chain.  Source
