Investigation Shows Minorities are More Likely to Use Fintech Lenders

Initial results from a congressional investigation shows that minority business owners are more likely to seek a loan from a fintech firm and potentially pay a higher fee; Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) wants to further explore whether or not these lenders are aggressively targeting these borrowers and offering higher rates; the investigation has focused on online lenders and their underwriting practices for emerging minority owned businesses. Investing Platform Focused on Female Investors Raises $32mn

Sallie Krawcheck previously worked as a Wall Street executive but has since founded Ellevest; the company offers a digital investing platform helping female investors access low-cost ETFs based on goals; Venus Williams, a professional tennis player, is among investors in the company; according to Krawcheck, women are less concerned with beating the market and focus rather on ensuring their money won't disappear completely; the platform also considers the longer lifespans of women and the possibility of extended time off from work; Business Insider provides screenshots of setting up an account; the app is not yet in the app store. Investment Bank Publishes List of Growing Startups

Boutique investment bank GP Bullhound has published a report on the fintech market identifying 39 global fintech unicorns valued at $1 billion or more and showing global venture capital investment into fintech at $13.6 billion in 2016; in its report the firm also identities a watch a list of 17 companies it expects to exceed $1 billion based on their growth, business models and market opportunity; numerous marketplace lenders are represented on the list including LendInvest, Prodigy Finance, ID Finance, Ebury and Kreditech. Investor Concerns Arise in Equity-Based Crowdfunding

While the passage of the JOBS Act in 2012 helped to spur crowdfunding into an exciting industry, questions have continued surrounding investor protections and the legitimacy of companies using this method to raise capital; SeedInvest CEO Ryan Feit recently told the New York Times: "I'm legitimately concerned that a lot of people are going to be losing money; investing in startups is really risky, and it's very different than buying a used couch. We definitely do not think you should treat it like Craigslist."; investors don't necessarily understand the investment and companies are not following the rules fully, causing many in the industry to legitimately worry about the way forward.  Source

Investors Bullish on 2017 Private Market Outlook

Private markets company SharesPost has released its 1st Annual Private Tech Investor Survey which finds private market investors bullish about 2017; private market investors think the correction that has occurred in 2016 has positioned the market for growth in 2017; 49% of survey participants think valuations will increase for private companies in 2017; private market investors are also bullish on initial public offerings for 2017; 65% of survey participants think ten or fewer unicorns will go public in the next 18 months which suggests two IPOs per quarter in 2017, an increase from only three IPOs in 2016.  Source

Investors Pull Funding from 30 Deals Due to Brexit

According to Lawrence Wintermeyer, head of Innovate Finance, 30 fintech startups had their funding cancelled or postponed by investors since the Brexit vote, forcing them to seek urgent funding elsewhere; in addition to local investors pulling their capital, startups have also said that funding from international investors has stalled due to the uncertainty surrounding the Brexit process; while the UK struggles, other European cities like Berlin have been actively recruiting firms to relocate.  Source
