Lend Academy Article: Potential Applications of Blockchain for Real Estate

Lend Academy reviews a session on applying blockchain to real estate after attending MIPIM, the world's largest conference dedicated to real estate; one company helping run a pilot is velox.RE; company is working with Chicago's Cook County on a program for transferring and tracking property titles as well as filing liens; the three perceived benefits are: a permanent, immutable public record that is immune to well-funded nation-state attacks, a path towards paperless land transfers and so-called "e-deeds" and reduced costs for offices across the country that want to upgrade electronic document processing systems; other applications for blockchain in real estate include tracking property ownership in emerging markets, real estate crowdfunding and tracking/transferring solar energy.  Source

Blockchain Technology in Utilities

Blockchain technology is being applied across a range of industries and the utilities sector is testing its use in a number of different ways; in utilities the use of a centralized ledger has many possibilities; industry professionals are testing the tracking of energy distribution and researching new ways of tracking solar and renewable energy; peer-to-peer energy tracking is also a new concept being tested with blockchain; trading flexibility is another area of research that could help improve industry efficiency; as these solutions evolve, industry standards are being developed to ensure consistent use and compliance and it seems that the large incumbent providers have the greatest advantage in developing new technology solutions.  Source

Coinbase Receives New York Approval for Cryptocurrency Trading

San Francisco-based Coinbase has received approval for digital currency trading of Ether and Litecoin in New York; the company was also granted approval for a debit card service called Shift Card; with the approval, Maria Vullo and the the New York State Department of Financial Services reiterated their position on the OCC's fintech charter, noting the importance for state fintech oversight.  Source

Technical Analysis Showing a Potential Crash for Bitcoin

While bitcoin's price has been reaching new highs its trading volatility has also been high; market momentum has recently been slowed by a number of factors including exchange regulation and new fees in China and the denial of the Winklevoss bitcoin ETF; Business Insider charts the cryptocurrencies progress and reports a double top with a neckline at $1,100 noting that if the price falls below the chart's neckline, technical analysis would indicate it's likely to fall even further, giving it a new expected average of approximately $900; given recent market factors a significant decrease in China trading volume and the technical analysis, bitcoin's price appears to be headed lower.  Source

Humaniq Launches App, Focuses on Emerging Markets

Humaniq is a blockchain startup focused on financial inclusion; the company released an alpha version of their app; initial features include remittance payments and P2P lending as well as support for cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and ether; Humaniq also has their own tokens called HMQ; app includes biometric ID verification for unlocking and verifying transactions; user profiles are based on facial and voice recognition algorithms; according to CEO Alex Fork: "Our initial target audience is people in emerging economies, and many of them don't have email. By using biometric ID we make the signup process more inclusive for people with low literacy while also lowering opportunities for fraud. Each real person will only ever be able to create one account, and no one will ever be able to steal their account. For businesses, a network full of real people is a dream come true, for reasons that are self-evident."  Source

New York-based ConsenSys has been elected to advise the City of Dubai on the first ever blockchain city technology effort; the initiative is led by the Smart Dubai Office and IBM, the government's strategic partner; as part of the Dubai Blockchain Strategy 2020, the city of Dubai will now require all government records and transactions to be documented using blockchain technology.  Source

Nasdaq and NYIAX Announce First Blockchain Exchange for Advertising Contracts

The New York Interactive Advertising Exchange has partnered with Nasdaq to create NYIAX, a blockchain trading platform for digital advertising contracts; Nasdaq has supported the system with its trading and blockchain technology; through the system publishers and advertisers can buy, sell and re-trade digital advertising as guaranteed contracts; NYIAX says it also plans to expand trading to other advertising markets including TV, print and radio.  Source
