China’s CredEX Fintech Gains Positive Market Exposure from LendIt USA 2017

CredEX has created an intermediary peer-to-peer lending technology solution which allows banks to facilitate peer-to-peer loans; the company participated in a roundtable forum at LendIt USA 2017 with Peter Renton, founder of LendIt and Jo Ann Barefoot, former deputy comptroller of the currency and Harvard professor; in comments regarding CredEX, Peter says: "Their instant credit decisions and the robust underwriting platform they have built has allowed them to become a leading fintech company in China in a very short time. Unlike most fintech companies they are 100% app-based, they are funded by banks and they are doing more than US$1 billion in loans annually. They represent the future of lending."  Source

Lufax Expanding to Hong Kong and Singapore, Also Working on IPO

Shanghai-based marketplace lender, Lufax, has announced it will be expanding its business into Hong Kong and Singapore; firm also announced plans in September for a Hong Kong-listed IPO which is expected to raise approximately $5 billion; company will leverage its relationship with Ping An for the expansion; funding for the expansion will also be supported by a $1.2 billion fundraise from earlier in the year.  Source

Online Lender Jinxing Investment on Trial in China

Fifteen employees of Jinxing Investment are on trial in Shanghai for fraudulent lending of 1.5 billion yuan (US$220 million); the employees are charged with illegally raising funds and taking investments from the public that were not used for their intended use; Ji Jianhua, the company's chief financial officer, told the court that the investments were fake and that funds were directed to personal or related accounts of president Wang Mian; the company shut down in June 2016 and Wang Mian escaped and has not been found.  Source

Trial Begins in Beijing for Ezubao Fraud Case

The court case for Ezubao has begun in Beijing; Ezubao and affiliated companies will be on trial for fraudulent investment of approximately 60 billion yuan ($8.6 billion); Ezubao's owners, Yucheng Holdings and Yucheng Global, were highly involved with the investments and will be on trial along with numerous other people associated with the fraudulent investment activities.  Source

Lend Academy Article: Yirendai Q4 2016 Earnings Review

Yirendai released its Q4 2016 earnings after the closing bell on March 15; the Chinese online lender issued a US initial public offering of its stock in December 2015; Lend Academy provides an analysis of the company's Q4 2016 results in their article; the firm has been growing online loan originations by over 100% per year since 2013; mobile has been a significant factor for the company with 98.8% of online volume generated through Yirendai's mobile application and 85% of investors using the mobile application for investment; as a well-established firm, Yirendai is also benefiting from China's P2P regulatory focus and a higher quality portfolio of borrowers and lenders; the firm is expanding its product lines and also offering a new platform as a service product, the Yirendai Enabling Platform; it expects a similar pace of growth in 2017 with minimum projected loan originations of RMB 33 billion ($4.753 billion) compared to RMB 20.28 billion ($2.9 billion) in 2016 and minimum revenue of RMB 4.4 billion ($634 million) compared to RMB 3.2 billion ($466.4 million) in 2016.  Source

Online Auto Financing Market in China Reported at RMB1.1tn in 2016

While China's fintech market has been a global leader, online auto financing has lagged other countries; it is currently only reporting a 30% penetration rate compared to 85% for the US; despite the slower growth, the market is reporting some recent activity specifically from Guazi.com, Kkucar, Didi Chuxing and UCAR; overall the market is expected to grow from RMB1.1 trillion ($159.758 million) in 2016 to RMB1.85 trillion ($268.684 million) in 2018. Ping An Bank Announces Third Party Depository Business for China’s P2P Industry

Chinese regulators have mandated that P2P lenders work with custody banks for depository services; Ping An Bank has announced a third party depository service and provides details in a document titled, "Measures for Third Party Depository of P2P Online Lending Platforms"; the document provides access criteria for lenders and the bank appears to be setting the industry standard for P2P custody services.  Source
