Taiwan Regulators Take Positive Approach to Cryptocurrencies

In a move that goes counter to the current regulatory trend the Taiwanese government has taken a positive approach to the new cryptocurrency market; "Just because China and South Korea are banning, doesn't mean that Taiwan should follow suit – there is a huge opportunity for growth in the future,” explained Wellington Koo, Chairman of Taiwan's Financial Supervisory Commission. PBoC Advisor Backs China’s ICO Ban

CoinDesk reports that Sheng Songcheng, counselor to the PBoC and an adjunct professor of economics and finance at the China Europe International Business School, explained that the Chinese government was right to move ahead with the ban; “In my opinion, these actions are largely aimed at averting risk and protecting investors’ interests while also being an opportunity to further regulate trading of virtual currencies,” as Songcheng writes in Caixin. Protostarr Token Shuts Down after SEC Investigation

Its platform focused on funding from fans for internet celebrities on YouTube, Twitch and other live streaming platforms; in August it raised 119.5 ether which is about $47,000; the SEC notified Protostarr of its investigation however a final status has not been reported; the firm says forming a legal department to manage the ICO investigation and potential need for registration is not within its short-term plans and it will refund its ICO investors. SEC Goes After Fraudulent ICOs

The Securities and Exchange Commission has charged two companies who they claim were operating fraudulent ICOs; REcoin Group Foundation and DRC World were claimed to defraud investors and sold unregistered securities; both companies claimed they had significant operations and networks when in reality they were shell companies; this continues a worldwide trend by financial regulators who are beginning to come down on the exploding ICO market. China Bans ICOs

Chinese authorities on Monday ordered a ban on initial coin offerings (ICOs); a PBoC statement ordered that ICO activities should be halted starting from Monday, and ICO platforms should not engage in exchange services between fiat currencies, virtual coins and tokens; two of China's leading ICO platforms, ICOAGE and ICOINFO, had already halted services before the official statement came out.
