The Curo Group targets underbanked consumers through WageDayAdvance in the UK and Speedy Cash in the US; they went public on Wednesday at $14 a share and were up more than 2.4 percent in their first day of trading; the former head of the CFPB led a Industry crackdown on payday lenders but new leadership points to those restrictions being lifted; the company charges about $25 per $100 borrowed and are backed by private equity group Friedman Fleischer & Lowe. Hong Kong's Legislative Council Panel on Financial Affairs published a document this week on their digital currency plans; The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), which acts as their central bank and financial regulator is working with banks and R3; according to the document: "The first phase of the research, which explores the feasibility of [central bank-issued digital currency] in performing domestic inter-bank payments, inter-corporate payment in the wholesale market and delivery versus payment (DvP) debt securities settlement, is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year. Subject to the findings of the first phase, HKMA will map out the next steps." Source
Northwestern Mutual has formed Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures which will invest in fintech firms; according to the press release, the commitment will focus on innovation to build greater digital relevance for clients, increase data-driven decision making and create back-end efficiencies with the goal of creating value for its more than four million clients; investments will range from $500,000 to $3 million; the company has already seen benefits from the acquisition of LearnVest in 2015 and is looking to invest more in similar companies. Orchard's weekly snapshot highlights some new securitization activity in the online lending market; SoFi has filed for its third securitization of 2017 (SCLP 2017-2); Kabbage has filed for their first securitization of the year; in its fourth quarter 2016 earnings report, Lending Club also reported a new securitization program with quarterly issuance of up to $100 million.
