Square has launched its mobile payment services for businesses in the UK; the UK marks the fifth country to offer the firm's services and Jack Dorsey says the firm plans to also expand further throughout Europe; with the launch, small businesses in the UK can now begin to use all of the services offered through the firm's feature products, the Square Reader and the Square Point of Sale app for transactions. HSBC is planning to hire 1,000 new Asian wealth management operations employees; the announcement is part of a cost cutting initiative which has closed 60 branches in the UK and moved 200 IT-related jobs to Asia; the newly added employees will primarily be focused on Chinese retail banking and wealth management, adding to a team of 2,400 employees. CB Insights has charted a market map of investment and wealth management companies; the market map includes 90 companies in seven main categories with subcategories for client group; for 2016, the firm reports a new high of 74 deals in wealth tech totaling $657 million; Betterment reported the top investment deal in 2016 with a $100 million Series E investment; in 2017 CB Insights reports 17 deals with $130 million in funding and the top investment going to Raisin with a $32 million Series C funding round. Julieann Thurlow of Reading Cooperative Bank saw the SoFi Super Bowl ad last year and decided to try out the lender as she watched the ad, she received a loan in a few minutes; her reaction set off a chain of events where she is now looking to accelerate her own bank's innovation to keep up with online lenders like SoFi; her reasoning is that these new entrants will begin to eat into their customers unless their technology is on a comparable scale; they now have a mobile experience where you can open new accounts and she is looking to have a mobile mortgage application live in the next year; she now attends innovation events and is looking to help their customers move into the digital age with the bank. Hardeep Walia spoke about the lack of transparency that exists in investing today with many investors investing in a black box as he demonstrates on stage; in turn, investors may be supporting companies who may not have the same values; sustainability is a trend and consumers are increasingly willing to pay more for sustainability but investors need to vote not just with consumption dollars, but also investment dollars; to that end Motif has launched a new digital wealth product called Motif Impact that allows investors to build an investment strategy around their values such as a sustainable planet, fair labor and good corporate behavior.
