FCA Tells P2P Lenders to Stop Industry Network Lending

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has requested that P2P lenders not lend to each other through industry network lending; the request comes as the regulator continues to increase its oversight and understanding of the industry; in the FCA's report it says that the industry network lending could be in violation of rules that require deposits for such transactions.  Source

Funding Circle Reaches New Milestones Following Brexit Vote

Despite initial concerns over risks from Brexit, the UK's Funding Circle has been growing significantly; Funding Circle is one of four firms Bloomberg plans to follow throughout the Brexit process which will begin when Prime Minister Theresa May triggers Article 50 of the EU Treaty; for Funding Circle, results following the Brexit vote in June have been overwhelmingly positive; in the second half of 2016, originations increased 50% from 2015 to 530 million British pounds ($685 million) and in the fourth quarter of 2016 the firm's UK division reported its first net profit; while some funding challenges and employee visa risks still remain, the firm's business seems likely to continue its positive trajectory; low rates on fixed income investments in the UK and slowed bank lending to small businesses appear to continue as leading factors for the firm's growth.  Source

January UK Loan Volumes Gain with Low Borrowing Rates

UK bank lending and mortgage approvals increased in January as rates remained low for borrowers; according to data from the British Bankers Association, consumer borrowing doubled from December to an increase of 538 million British pounds ($673 million) with loan growth in personal loans and overdrafts reporting an eight month high of 422 million British pounds ($527.9 million); bank lending to businesses also reported its highest increase since January 2015 at 3.4 billion British pounds ($4.25 billion); mortgage approvals were also significantly higher at 44,657 with total mortgage borrowing at 13.8 billion British pounds ($17.26 billion) and refinancing approvals up 15.7% from January 2016.  Source

Uber Partners with Robo Advisor for Employee Benefits

Uber has announced it will partner with Moneyfarm to provide financial advice services for its employees in the UK; Moneyfarm and Uber will offer the robo advice to approximately 40,000 UK drivers; speculators believe the UK market will see more robo advisory partnerships as the services have yet to gain significant market traction in comparison to other countries.  Source

Monzo Nearing Completion of New Funding

UK digital bank Monzo is nearing completion of a new funding round that will add 20 to 30 million British pounds in capital for the firm; the investment round is being led by Thrive Capital; sources also report that the firm is planning an equity crowdfunding campaign later in the year; Monzo is led by CEO Tom Blomfield and the firm was granted a UK banking license in August 2016; it currently has 100,000 users with activity driven by pre-paid Mastercards and mobile applications; the firm recently declined an acquisition offer from an incumbent bank and says it still has a lot it plans to accomplish.  Source

Zopa Eyeing Secured Loans?

Zopa, who specializes in unsecured consumer loans may be looking to expand into secured loans, specifically the auto segment; the company sees a healthy level of demand but a generally poor consumer experience; Zopa's Chief Marketing Officer Amy Miller stated, "People are getting poor deals in that area and end up paying significantly higher annual percentage rates than they would if they arranged their financing before going into a dealership."; the company is also reportedly considering other loan terms, such as 18 month loans as well as a balloon payment loan.  Source

Digital-Only Bank Funding in the UK

Business Insider shares data on total funds raised by UK-based digital only banks; Atom Bank leads in total funding and is reportedly in process of closing another 100 million British pounds ($124 million) in equity which would bring their total raised to 235 million British pounds ($294.6 million); other players include Tandem Bank, Starling Bank, Monzo, N26 and Monese; Monzo is also in the process of raising money with a Series C funding round.  Source

Construction Sector Challenges for Invoice Financing

The construction sector accounts for approximately 16% of invoices financed on the MarketInvoice platform and issues from construction company Elimco UK have uncovered some new potential risks for the sector; Elimco UK has stopped making payments to the platform; in most cases MarketInvoice as the lender would receive preferred rights to the company's payments however in the construction sector set off rights give the customer preference of payment which has caused the construction company to default with MarketInvoice; the total amount of losses reported for MarketInvoice has not been disclosed; the company says its overall loss rate is 2.4% after recoveries; the firm also says it does not have plans for data filtering by industry category since it would lead to cherry picking loans.  Source
