Follow Up Friday: SoFi’s New Fund

SoFi has announced a new fund following a theme discussed at LendIt USA 2017; SoFi's new fund, the SoFi Prime Income Fund, will target family offices; it has raised $105 million from 33 investors each contributing a minimum of $500,000 and will include SoFi's unsecured student and personal loans; it adds to a Credit Opportunities Fund introduced last year; at LendIt USA 2017 panelists discussed new fund creation by platforms; the industry has begun to favor platform fund development over retail fund development; the complexity of marketplace loans and specifically their liquidity risks have kept them from widespread expansion in the retail fund management industry; challenges such as managing international currencies and using alternative leverage strategies are just a few of the retail fund risks for investment managers. P2P Global Investments Fund Reports 0.55% Increase in March NAV

The P2P Global Investments Fund has assets under management of GBP833 million ($1.07 billion) and reported an increase of 0.55% in its March NAV; total NAV return for Q1 2017 was 1.18% and the Fund has decreased its discount to 15%; the Fund has been continuously evolving its strategy and is also reviewing its investment manager. IW Capital Reports on UK Investor Sentiment Following Brexit

IW Capital has surveyed 1,000 investors who have between GBP10,000 ($12,812) and over GBP250,000 ($320,300) worth of investments; the report shows UK investors are willing to take on greater risk in 2017; 44% of investors think Brexit will have a positive impact on their investment strategy; many investors see investment opportunity in private equity and UK investors also reported they will be looking more to tax efficient investing. How Asset Allocators Think about Fintech

Understanding how asset allocators view the space is something a lot of online lenders and fintech companies want to grasp; the panel at LendIt USA 2017 with asset allocators discussed their thoughts on fintech generally and the alternative yield market; traditional fixed income has become less attractive and so more investors are looking at where they can get greater yield for their investment; there is a thought that normalization of interest rate policy globally will ultimately resolve itself in an unpleasant way; alternative yield is a new asset class so selling to the big institutions has been a challenge; it really comes down to finding the right group within the institution and selling it as the right type of asset; knowing your market appetite is also key, such as in Europe where their are negative yields and public markets have been overbought by central banks; vigilance of recent lessons learned and beginning to fully understand this new asset class are two key takeaways as asset allocators begin taking a closer look toward this market. Marvelstone Capital is working with fintech startup Smartfolio to develop a robo advisor solution for family offices; it will target family offices based in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar and India; the robo advisor solution is being designed as a hybrid service for family offices with less than US$1 billion in AUM however Marvelstone will also market to family offices with AUM of US$1 billion to US$10 billion; it plans to launch the new solution in the third quarter of 2017. Ranger Direct Lending Fund Affected by Argon Credit Write-Down

The Ranger Direct Lending Fund is trading at a discount to its NAV in part due to effects from issues at Argon Credit; the Fund had exposure of $28 million to Argon when it announced its bankruptcy in December 2016; while it said the Fund would see little effect from the exposure it has now announced a write-down from holdings in the Princeton Alternative Income fund which was affected by Argon Credit; further developments continue to occur and volatility is expected to continue for the Fund's share price.
