Zopa’s Giles Andrews Joins MarketInvoice as Chairman

Giles Andrews launched Zopa, the industry's first peer-to-peer lending platform, in 2005; he has now taken on a new role as the chairman of MarketInvoice; MarketInvoice provides P2P financing for small business invoices giving them an alternative source for working capital; Giles Andrews will help the firm scale its business and reach its 2017 goal of 2 billion British pounds ($2.48 billion) in lending.  Source

Zopa Recaps 2016 with Total Lending of 680mn British Pounds

Zopa provides 2016 year end stats; in total they lent 680 million British pounds ($830 million); helped 20,000 people improve their home and 29,000 buy a car; the company also highlights several awards they won including Most Trusted Loan Provider by Moneywise for the seventh year in a row; the company struck many partnerships including offering phone finance with Unshackled, loans through personal finance app Pariti and a partnership with Airbnb; company also launched three new lending products for investors with varying risk and return profiles; in 2016 we also saw the first securitization of Zopa loans and learned of Zopa's plans to apply for a banking license.  Source

Diverging Viewpoints on Becoming a Bank from Funding Circle and Zopa

Funding Circle and Zopa both discussed the rationale for becoming a bank at the AltFi Europe Summit; Funding Circle's Samir Desai talked about three ways online lenders are collaborating with banks and said, "We at Funding Circle have no plans to launch a bank."; comparatively, Zopa is taking the opposite approach and Jaidev Janardana discussed the firm's bank expansion, noting that the firm will be focusing on savings deposit accounts and will be using deposits to fund loans.  Source

Zopa’s Second Securitization

The latest securitization of Zopa loans priced tighter than last year’s; it was led by P2PGI and arranged by Deutsche Bank; the senior tranche was rated AA by Moody’s; Jaidev Janardana, Zopa’s CEO stated, “This is a further demonstration of investor and market confidence in our origination and underwriting capabilities. Our ability to originate high quality loans continues to make the Zopa investment asset a distinctive and attractive one to retail and institutional investors alike.” Source
