Travelex Outage Causes Some Banks to Halt Foreign Currency Transactions

The New Year’s Eve ransomware attack on Travelex has disrupted foreign currency cash transactions for many large banks including Barclays, Lloyds and Westpac; the internal networks and consumer facing apps for Travelex have been offline since the attack and their popular airport kiosks have resorted to manual operations; they also have a lesser known service helping banks handle foreign cash with a network of high security vaults in 14 countries including the U.S. which has also been affected; the hackers are demanding $3 million of they will release five gigabytes of stolen data including sensitive personal information.
