The student focused digital bank, BankMobile, has created an online magazine entitled Paradigm Money; the effort is an attempt by the bank to build brand awareness and help current customers manage their money; the site has news, opinion, interviews and advice for customers; Ash Exantus, BankMobile’s director of financial education, tells TearSheet “We wanted to create a site that was independent from the bank that’s not promoting our products or services, but as a place other people can go for financial news and financial literacy.” Source.
A new report by the Council of Economic Advisers said cyberattacks cost the U.S. between $56bn and $109bn in 2016; the council's report represents between 0.31% and 0.58% of the 2016 U.S. gross domestic product being at risk; the financial sector had the biggest number of attacks seeing about 471 breaches in 2016; the report made an ominous statement on detecting threats saying, “Due to common vulnerabilities, instances of security breaches occur across firms and in patterns that are difficult to anticipate.” Source.
According to a report by Which almost 92 percent of consumers have not heard of open banking; slow adoption by banks is one reason for the low numbers; another reason is many people have started to use non bank services for payments or other tasks, the term open banking is still relatively new; banks are starting to innovate, by building or partnering, and open banking will only help to push innovation forward. Dozens of Coinbase users were complaining on Reddit regarding unexpected charges on their credit and debit cards; Worldpay and Visa issued a joint statement saying the issue was not cause by Coinbase; the Financial Times reports that the source of the problem was still not clear though it did seem related to merchant category codes that were assigned to Coinbase; the issues bring up concerns that regulators have been discussing, rules around the new digital currencies are not clear. According to KPMG’s Pulse of Fintech report fintech investment increased for the third straight quarter to $5.8bn; the big driver behind this is banks continue to increase their investments and partnerships with fintech firms; “You’re seeing more partnerships because there is more interest on both sides in collaborating, and bringing two different sets of values to the table,” said Luis Valdich, managing director of venture investing at Citi Ventures, to American Banker; banks have been keen to focus on news technologies like artificial intelligence, advanced analytics tools and blockchain. Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan says that the big bank point of view of Dodd-Frank is that the law is fine; he explained that none of the big banks are trying to touch the law and it has made the financial system safer; small banks have been pushing to roll back some of the regulations associated with Dodd-Frank because they feel it is too burdensome; the interview at the Economic Club of Washington also touches on fintech, blockchain and other bank related issues. Coinbase launched their Coinbase Commerce platform to allow merchants to accept digital currency; the service will be integrated into the merchant’s checkout or added as a payment option; the company is accepting merchants by having them email in to be added; this positions Coinbase well as Stripe no longer accepts payments and PayPal has been slow to adopt. BBVA and digital business account provider Azlo struck a partnership that focuses on freelancers; with the freelance worker trend increasing the bank is looking to position themselves to better serve the market; BBVA invested in and helped incubate the company through their New Digital Businesses unit; this is part of a wider trend at the bank to help innovation, both inside and outside the bank itself.
