Chase is starting a new marketing campaign by using GIFs across social media channels in an effort to get millennials to use their QuickPay product by Zelle; the campaign shows a shift by the bank to make campaigns more personalized and geared at a younger target market; Donna Vieira, chief marketing officer for Chase’s consumer bank tells TearSheet, “The channels, mediums and media you use; the copy and creative form like memes and GIFs. Clearly 15 years ago this would be nonexistent, but it’s how this audience communicates with each other, tells their stories and what they find engaging.”; Chase saw a 50 percent increase in p2p transactions in 2017 and a 15 percent increase in new enrollments for their app. Source.

Ireland has become a hub of technological innovation as big tech, fintech and big financial services companies set up shop in country as an alternative to the UK; “Ireland has always been quite an innovative country; it has to be because it is such a small market, you can’t just lean on the Irish market to produce a decent fintech business.” says Sinead Fitzmaurice, co-founder of TransferMate, to the FT; talent from Google and Facebook have not only started their own companies but have also moved into finance giants like Deutsche Bank; low corporate tax rates combined with the tech talent has help the country become an emerging fintech market. SoFi recently partnered with WeWork to offer discounted student refinancing to WeWork employees and members; the move is part of a broader strategy for the company to move beyond their initial target market of alumni from top universities; offering student loan repayments as a workplace benefit is a new trend as companies look to help young employees get out from under the mountain of student debt; “The bigger story is that the student loan pay down as a benefit is a massive industry that hasn’t even got going yet — every Fortune 500 company is going to have this as a benefit in the next year or two,” said Peter Renton, analyst and founder of Lend Academy, to TearSheet. Augmentum Capital, venture group backed by Lord Rothschild, is looking to raise more than $175mn for a closed end fund to invest in fintech startups; the company plans to take positions in p2p lending platform Zopa and crowdfunding platform Seedrs, both of whom are in the UK; “There are very few places you can go to right now to invest in fintech at the moment on the public markets,” said George O’Connor, analyst at Stifel, to the FT. “So [this] taps into the zeitgeist.” Source.
Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase and others have launched or will launch their own robo products to compete with slicker startups; after seeing the success of startups in the space the banks realized they needed to improve their offerings to keep customers and attract newer, younger ones; the trend to move away from white labeling technology to building their own is a recent one as some traditional players like UBS, State Street and John Hancock are still using services from SigFig, Motif or NextCapital. Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck was hacked and saw the theft of $543mn worth of customer holdings; the Japanese regulator, FSA, said it was concerned that most of the funds were kept in hot wallets online, instead of cold wallets offline; seeing that this is not the first hack of a hot wallet model the regulators might start mandating customer funds be held offline; nothing has been passed yet but the more thefts we see the more regulators will look to try and mitigate future issues. Ping An Technology and SparkLabs Group will team up to form Ping An Fintech Accelerator; the program will encourage companies to apply from around the world and the first batch will target 10 companies; CEO of Ping An Technology, Ericson Chan, said to Crowdfund Insider, “We are excited to partner with SparkLabs to collaborate with FinTech companies from around the globe. ABN Amro, ING and Rabobank were the victims of DDoS cyber attacks this past weekend; all the banks saw their websites become unavailable or would run extremely slow; the companies have released statements that their services are now fully restored and that clients’ details were not compromised.
