Open Banking, seen as a potential game changing regulatory change, is set to launch in the next few days in the UK; Open Banking requires banks to allow fintechs and other third parties to have access to customer data if the consumer agrees to grant access; the new law will allow for a safer data exchange, in the past consumers shared their login details and third parties scraped the data, and standardize access across the UK and Europe; while banks have pushed back on the coming change this will allow customers to better control their information and tailor services to their lifestyles. Real estate investing startup Cadre signed a partnership with Goldman Sachs to allow their private wealth clients access to the platform; Cadre has already been able to secure $250mn in commitments from Goldman’s clients and has said their is a steady stream still in the pipeline; private wealth clients will get a log in for Cadre and access to vetted deals in commercial real estate; in addition to the partnership Goldman Sachs also becomes and investor in the company. BNP Paribas Asset Management was able to complete a fund distribution test using blockchain technology; the test used BNP Paribas Securities Services’ blockchain programme, Fund Link and FundsDLT; as AltFi reports the test was able to show Fund Link connecting to other blockchains and the transaction completed each part of the fund trade process, from order delivery to trade processing; this continues a trend from BNP Paribas Asset Management as they have also launched a specialist fund for fintech investment and began updating their legacy technology. Google Wallet, Android Pay and Pay with Google will now all become Google Pay; this way the company can better brand their products and make it less confusing; Google has launched a number of products in the last 10 years aimed at different payments markets and found varying degrees of success; they hope ensuring the same brand for multiple layers of products will help to cut down on confusion and hopefully help them to build a better customer experience to compete with the likes of Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. ProShares and VanEck have both decided to withdraw their ETF filings with the SEC; VanEck filed for an actively managed Bitcoin Strategy ETF and ProShares said it was launching a suite of bitcoin ETFs; neither company responded to requests for comment; it is widely believed that bitcoin ETFs are the next step for the new currency. TD Bank is looking to boost their AI driven technologies by their recent acquisition of Toronto based Layer 6; Layer 6 provides AI powered prediction engine for data; Michael Rhodes, group head, innovation, technology and shared services, TD Bank, says to Banking Technology that AI has “potential to power a new generation of data-driven applications from personalized and real-time advice to predictive analytics that will shape the future of banking for millions of individuals”.; the deal represents the fourth AI focused move by the bank in the past couple of years. Current Expected Credit Loses Standard or CECL goes into effect in 2020, though banks are now starting to experiment with technology solutions to solve the problem it causes; the requirement forces banks to put potential loan losses on their books when they put an asset on their books; right now it can take a bank almost a week to go through a largely excel driven process; beginning to implement changes now can help banks stay ahead and begin using technology to solve other data driven problems; Bank Independent of Sheffield, Alabama has said since using technology from Sageworks they have cut down time from a week to a day. Alkami’s white label technology has helped to provide mobile banking apps for credit unions and banks; they just raised a $70mn series D round led by General Atlantic, with participation from MissionOG, S3 Ventures and Argonaut Private Equity; the company has a SaaS model where they charge banks on the number of users per month; they plan to use the new infusion of capital to grow their sales and invest in innovation. TransferWise is privately launching a borderless account and debit card; the move is beginning to draw comparisons to other fintech companies like Revolut; the account will be rolled out in a small launch then a full launch thereafter; the account will give you access to local bank details for the UK, US, Australia and Europe, as well as allowing you to hold and convert 28 currencies; the move is not seen as replacing the current account but is instead a partner account; the account would allow people working in different countries to convert to their local currency without the hassle of additional fees or having to join a local bank.
