Bank of England Concerned about Consumer Credit Defaults

The Bank of England's Financial Policy Committee discussed concerns over consumer credit defaults in its recently released minutes; credit card, bank loan and car loan borrowing has increased and the Bank is also concerned about prolonged interest free offers and eased underwriting standards; stress testing has revealed potential losses for banks of 18.5 billion British pounds ($23 billion) on their consumer credit loans and 11.8 billion British pounds ($15 billion) on their mortgage loans; as the Bank monitors consumer lending, it is likely new constraints will be required to manage risks in the new economic environment.  Source

PSD2 Has Potential to Bring Back Personal Touch to Banks

Peter Ryan of the software provider Temenos believes PSD2 has the potential to offer banks the personal touch they have lost; allowing consumers to share their data via APIs can allow banks to learn more about their customers and offer tailored products; while some banks have been proactive there is a fair share of the market who fear open banking; better understanding of the potential in PSD2 will help banks embrace what’s ahead. ABF Joins UK Bank Referral Scheme

Multi-lending platform Alternative Business Funding (ABF) will become the fourth alternative finance business to be involved in the UK's bank referral scheme; the bank referral scheme began in November 2016 and has been reporting success with over 8,000 SMEs being referred to alternative funding sources; the other three businesses in the referral scheme network include Funding Options, Funding Xchange and Bizfitech. Reflecting on the Zopa/Uber Pilot

Zopa launched a pilot with provide Uber drivers with low credit scores car loans; however the partnership didn’t attract the amount of customers it had hoped; Zopa stated in the FT article, “The pilot was interesting, but demonstrated that the potential opportunity was limited for us, and we had other priorities.”; Bryan Zhang, co-founder of the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance discusses one of the problems in the industry today, attracting borrowers .
