Open Banking Adoption Looks to be Slow and Steady

According to a new study by Accenture 7 out of 10 consumers would be reluctant to share their Information with third party providers; Citi recently published a study pointing to three main reasons that wide scale adoption will take longer; reasons include slow consumer adoption, fragmented market for new open banking services and the ability for payment providers to adapt to new rules; thus far open banking has been slow but big banks like Lloyds Banking Group and RBS have made big tech investments anticipating the change will happen over time. Auxmoney Was Profitable in 2017

Auxmoney is an online lending platform based in Germany; the platform grew origination volumes by 75% in the year to €316 million across 40,000 loans; the company now has lent around €700 million across 100,000 loans to date; last year auxmoney announced a partnership with digital bank N26 to expand their borrower base; auxmoney was profitable for the first time in the second half of 2017 which sets them apart from many platforms. Virgin Money Launching Digital Bank

The company announced the news in an earnings call; they will begin testing products this year and have invested $53.3 million developing the new bank; Virgin Money is said to have signed an agreement with 10x Future Technologies to develop the platform. Source

New MIFID II Regulations Could Lead to a Windfall for Robo Advisors

One of the key pieces to the new MIFID II regulations is more transparency around investment fees; robo advisors have made their products more transparent and less complex, seeing that traditional advisors are now forced to be more transparent robo advisors might begin seeing business headed their way; before MIFID II investors incurred costs which were not required to be disclosed for buying and selling of shares, taxes, custody, slippage and more; implementation has been slow as incumbents try to adjust to the new regulatory requirements. BNP Paribas Launches New Investment Fund

The french bank is launching a new fund that will invest in fintech startups; the fund will be managed by BNP Paribas’ Capital Partners and will also allocate to venture capital funds in areas such as ai, blockchain, cyber security and blockchain; Jacques d’Estais, BNP Paribas group deputy COO and head of international financial services stated, “At BNP Paribas, we’re firmly convinced that Open Innovation is a powerful driver for the transformation that will help to build the bank of tomorrow and enable us to continue to provide our clients with high value-added products and services.” Source

Defaults on High Risk Loans at Zopa Rise

UK based Zopa has warned investors that defaults on high risk loans are rising; Zopa increased originations to high risk borrowers in 2016 and introduced their Zopa Core and Zopa Plus Products; the company originally expected default rates for 2016 at 4.14 percent but have revised that number to 4.93 percent; they also raised their estimates for 2017 loans to these borrowers to be 4.86 percent from 4.52 percent. Anyfin is based in Sweden and allows users to refinance existing loans using a photo of a loan statement; the round was co-led by Accel and Northzone and included Rocket Internet’s Global Founders Capital along with other angel investors; Anyfin is currently only available in Sweden but they have ambitions to expand further into Europe.
