Fund manager, Ben Conway of Hawksmoor, promotes alternative credit as a risk averse investment in the current market; with cash levels reaching 15 year highs according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch, many investment managers have significantly increased their low risk fixed income allocations; Hawksmoor says the growing number of alternative credit investments are providing a good area of value across all markets and a strong fixed income alternative. In an interview with Business Insider at LendIt Europe Zopa CEO Jaidev Janardana says even though new investors are on hold they are growing lending volumes by as much as 50 percent; the investor waiting list is over 15,000 and the current plan is to have them start investing by year end; the interview also touched on consumer credit and the overall economy in the UK. Peer-to-peer platform Octopus Choice is estimating GBP50 million ($64.08 million) in loans in its first year of business; the platform offers loans secured on residential property with average returns of 4.2% and loan to value ratios of up to 70%; the firm's loans have ranged from GBP95,000 ($121,744) to more than GBP5 million ($6.41 million); the firm has been fully authorized by the FCA and has received its HMRC approval to offer an IFISA. Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank President Patrick Harker explained in remarks at the Global Interdependence Center's Payment Systems in the Internet Age conference that increased regulatory oversight of the growing fintech sector is necessary; "Regulation is not just a question of protecting consumers; it's a question of protecting the innovators as well," Harker said. "It's in their best interest to have an established framework in which to operate."; he believes getting ahead of the curve with regulation is the way to go, instead of waiting to respond to the next possible crisis.
