Boutique investment bank GP Bullhound has published a report on the fintech market identifying 39 global fintech unicorns valued at $1 billion or more and showing global venture capital investment into fintech at $13.6 billion in 2016; in its report the firm also identities a watch a list of 17 companies it expects to exceed $1 billion based on their growth, business models and market opportunity; numerous marketplace lenders are represented on the list including LendInvest, Prodigy Finance, ID Finance, Ebury and Kreditech. Zelle is seeing thousands of signups each day and last year saw $75bn in payments, but fraud has become a bigger problem for the company; fraudsters have used some weaknesses like inconsistent notifications when money is sent or received and the speed of transactions because the full posting happens later; they have also seen spoof emails or texts which trick customers into authorizing transactions to a fraudster, Zelle and the banks say they are working on improving the issues. The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance has released its second report on the Asia Pacific region. Alternative finance volume totaled $245.28 billion in 2016, up from $103.31 billion in 2015; China continues to be a main driver for growth but other geographies continue to grow albeit off of smaller bases; further details about the region are outlined in the report. The online lender has named Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Numis Corp to work on their upcoming IPO; the IPO is currently slated for the second or third quarter which may value the company around $2 billion; if successful it would be the largest IPO for a British fintech company; Index Ventures, Union Square Ventures and Accel Partners were early investors in the company.
