Marqeta has hired its first employee in London as it aims for a 2018 European launch; the firm provides payment card technology and works with other fintech firms such as Square and Kabbage; they have raised a total of $76 million, which includes a recent $25 million investment which was led by Visa; CEO Jason Gardner stated in a Business Insider interview, “The use-cases we see here in the US and Canada are very similar to the use-cases we see in Europe. Since our inception [we] have always seen ourselves as a global issuer-processor and Europe is obviously an enormous market.” Source
APIs combined with banking has become an important topic for banks and fintech companies; we are seeing increasing interest in APIs as every bank has to have an API or open banking strategy; since APIs often need to be built on legacy infrastructure there are often many challenges involved; the panel has a wide variety of perspectives from API service providers to banks who share how to build APIs on traditional banking technology. Raisin is looking to expand on their deposit marketplace by offering a term deposit product to European SMEs; this will allow SMEs to earn money on their cash instead of dealing with negative interest rates that have been prevalent across Europe; currently Raisin has enlisted Banco BNI Europa from Portugal, Younited Credit from France and Greenhill Bank from Germany in the product. A former SoFi employee has filed a California lawsuit; he is arguing that he was fired for reporting sexual harassment and has included in his court filing, allegations of impropriety in the handling of loans; source also reports that a broader class action lawsuit is being prepared on behalf of a group of mistreated employees. UK digital bank Starling Bank is now available to a broader set of users; still in a beta testing phase, the firm is now adding additional clients beyond just friends, family and product testers; as enhancements to the platform it recently announced its public API, which will allow for a product marketplace, and it has also partnered with TransferWise; Starling Bank will be offering its users full current account functionality with a contactless MasterCard debit card also including international payment services.
