The marketplace lender has extended the maturity of its credit facility with Deutsche Bank to March 2019; the revised terms also add an additional $52 million to the credit facility; in comments regarding the revised terms, Howard Katzenberg, chief financial officer of OnDeck said, "The closing of this transaction reflects a continued ability to execute our financing strategy for 2017, which includes extending debt maturities and creating additional funding capacity for future loan growth." Facial recognition startup Megvii Face++ raised $460mn in their most recent investment round led by China State-Owned Venture Capital Fund and the China-Russia Investment Fund; Ant Financial was also involved in the round and the company did not disclose valuation, though their most recent round valued the company at $1.5bn; Face++ uses facial recognition to identity people and counts Ant Financial and the Chinese government as two of their biggest clients. FundingSecure has received its HMRC approval and launched its IFISA; FundingSecure offers secured loans and markets annual returns of 12% to 16%; investors can invest up to GBP20,000 ($25,569) in the IFISA in 2017 according to UK regulations. Source
Speaking at the Development High-Level Forum, CEO Eric Jing called Blockchain, “the cornerstone of trust for the digital society in the future.”; while Jing is bullish on the long term outlook for blockchain technology he also curbed enthusiasm stating that it isn’t ready for a “large-scale outbreak”, comparing the current speculation similar to the internet bubble; he also shared that the technology will be more applicable in the next 2-3 years and that there were still some challenges to overcome. A 2015 McKinsey report says today's technology is ready to replace approximately 45% of US jobs across a wide range of industries; federal and state governments have been receiving numerous inquiries about the effects of robot automation on the labor market however little has been done by legislators on the topic; Bill Gates has one suggestion for the economy; he suggests a tax for robot automation; a number of scenarios have come from Gates' robot tax suggestions, including: a company tax for robot automation that would contribute to social programs, designating government funds for salaried workers affected by robots, using taxes to provide a universal income for all citizens and a negative income tax. Barclaycard is rebranding as Barclays in the US and launching a digital only bank in 2018; they have been testing the market since last year and plan to fully launch their offering next year; Barclays is more of a household name in the UK but has been offering credit card services under the Barclaycard name in the US.
