Habito has raised its Series B funding round, led by Atomico; existing investors Ribbit Capital, Mosaic Ventures and Revolutionary (Ad)Ventures also participated; total funding is now EUR27 million ($35.14 million) for the London based company; the company brings the mortgage process online, describing itself as a digital mortgage broker; one of their biggest competitors is Trussle; funds will be used to integrate with major retail banks and high street lenders; Habito also plans to expand offerings to other parts of the mortgage process including home and life insurance. Bitcoin Software Addition 'SegWit' Could Make Digital Currency Faster The Bitcoin community is ready to roll out an enhancement to the digital currency's code base; SegWit (which stands for "Segregated Witness") separates the encrypting of the transaction information from the currency miner's validation signature; currency miners need extensive computing resources and time to prove that a transaction is true and valid, therefore this step has traditionally slowed down the recording of transactions; done with testing, the new SegWit feature could be released as soon as November 15th; it is considered officially adopted once 95% of the Bitcoin software community deploys the code; this could take as little as a month or two, or significantly longer.

PeerIQ's Weekly Industry Update notes this week's SFIG Vegas 2017 conference on structured finance; PeerIQ's Ram Ahluwalia will be moderating a panel titled, "The Outlook for Securitization and Marketplace Lending"; on February 26, PeerIQ also released an industry white paper titled, "Data Standards and Best Practices" which details industry standardization of data and discusses the importance of data transparency; at the SFIG 2017 event on Monday the firm announced a new data partnership with 1010data. Red envelope gifting is a Chinese New Year tradition that has become digitized as a result of advanced payment processing; the January 27 weekend marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year and the country is expected to transact over 100 billion digital envelopes, an increase from 32 billion in 2015 which reported a 1,000% increase from the prior year; payment processors integrated with social media have increasingly been gaining market share and supporting digital transaction growth; bitcoin transactions are also expected to increase for the Chinese New Year. Goldman Sachs head of commodities research, Jeff Currie, told Bloomberg TV that bitcoin is a commodity though with less liquidity than gold; he explains, “"It's a commodity. A security, by definition, has a liability attached to it. Take a dollar bill, it has a liability to the US government. Commodities do not have liabilities.”; similar to gold it is not backed by a government or a company but is significantly more volatile. Source.
Small business lender Fundbox believes their new credit and payment product will help to solve the cash flow issue at small businesses; “We want to do for [small-business] B-to-B commerce what the entire credit card infrastructure has done for B-to-C commerce,” said Prashant Fuloria, chief operating officer of Fundbox, to American Banker; one of the biggest reasons for some of these issues is there is no credit scoring equivalent for small businesses; Fundbox Pay allows businesses to get paid immediately and gives those invoiced 60 days to pay at no charge, allowing businesses to handle the seasonal cash flow issues without too much pain.
