Traditional Banks Could Be the Disruptors with Low Fee Online Lending Platforms

Emerging online lending platforms from traditional banks could be the market's disruptors with their ability to offer low fees; few banks have emerged with proprietary online lending platforms however the fee structures offered by Marcus from Goldman Sachs have caused some industry participants to fear the emergence of similar models; other speculators believe traditional banks are not agile enough to build and offer market leading online lending capabilities in a competitive timeframe; Orchard says competition will be fierce but the end result is likely to produce improved and expanded access to capital for customers.  Source

Lantern Credit Acquires Machine Learning Library for Enhanced Services

Lantern Credit has acquired the Abstract Regression Classification (ARC) Machine Learning Library to enhance its proprietary machine learning solution, Beam AI; the firm expects the acquisition and machine learning enhancements to improve its credit advice, credit offers and support for financial institutions; according to Chad Swensen, CEO of Lantern Credit, "Leveraging the ARC software to advance the Beam AI technology produces the most advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning application in the consumer credit management space."  Source

Funding Circle Originates over 2bn British Pounds in P2P Loans

Funding Circle has reported cumulative originations of over 2 billion British pounds in P2P loans since its launch in 2010; it is the largest online marketplace for small business loans and has been originating approximately 100 million British pounds a month since November; its cumulative loan originations are currently just slightly less than Zopa which surpassed 2 billion British pounds in January and was the industry's first platform to launch in 2005.  Source

Fintechs See Amazon Checking Accounts as Positive

Speaking to American Banker fintech firms Chime, Moven, Kabbage and more say the move by Amazon is a net positive; most comments showed surprise that it took the retail giant this long to make a move like this; the overall sentiment was positive, pointing out that the entrance of Amazon will increase knowledge of fintech and validating their thoughts on the need for improved consumer experience in banking; the fear that Amazon would just take over is overblown, there is room for the giant retailer and a lot of fintechs who cater to a specific market. General Secretary Xi Lays Out Vision for Tech Firms

In an address to the 19th CPC National Congress Xi called for bigger efforts to increase growth in internet based companies, big data and artificial intelligence; “We will make sure that our payment, wealth management and credit services can improve the welfare of the unbanked and underbanked population,” said Ant Financial CEO Eric Jing who was responding to another section of Xi’s speech which looks for the economy to better serve everyone. Identity Fraud in the US Hits an All Time High

A record number of Americans experienced identity fraud in 2017, that represents an 8 percent increase from 2016; according to a study by Javelin 16.7 million people were hit by identity fraud; the rate of increase for identity fraud has slowed from 2016 but Americans that were notified about a breach also went up 30 percent; fraud prevention has become one of the main topics in fintech and banking as companies look to leverage new technologies like AI and blockchain for solutions.
