SBI Ripple Asia this summer announced plans for a Japanese blockchain development consortia; now, it says interest from banks has been so high that they are launching in November 2016 with 47 member banks, as opposed to an originally planned launch in March 2017 with 30 banks; the participants will be working first on a proof of concept for real-time remittance and cross-border payments; participants include Mizuho, Bank of Yokohama and SBI Sumishin Net Bank. Banking Committee Chairman Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, added a provision to the bill for the FHFA to review credit scoring alternatives; the FHFA currently uses FICO’s classic scoring model for loan applicants; the provision adds a new piece to the ongoing argument occurring between FICO and VantageScore; FICO and some lawmakers say the FHFA is already going through a review process for credit scores; the FHFA did ask for input on new scoring models in December and is working through the comment process. As covered on LendIt News earlier, Malaysia's Securities Commission recently announced licenses for six P2P lending sites; one such site, EthisKapital, claims to be the first licensed platform anywhere that also adheres to Shari'ah law; Islamic Shari'ah law interpreted literally prohibits the payment of any interest on loans based on the term "riba" however modern interpretations allow for modest interest rates and/or the use of a fixed transaction fee rather than accruing interest; EthisKapital's CEO also has co-founded the Islamic Fintech Alliance. Global Times recently comments on China's unregulated internet finance sector, stating that the online finance market requires cooling through tighter regulation after years of explosive but unruly growth; due to the lack of regulation, internet finance is often associated with financial irregularities, with many players operating without obtaining any license, for one; Global Times believes only a regulated internet finance industry can serve the real economy, and that chaotic development of internet finance will only pose risks to the country's financial stability. Shareholders of PayPal have sued firm directors implying that management falsified statements in quarterly reporting related to Venmo; as a subsidiary of PayPal, Venmo's business activities influence the overall results of the firm; in 2016 Venmo was investigated for unfair and deceptive practices resulting in a fine and ongoing investigations with the FTC; shareholders are arguing that PayPal did not properly disclose and inform shareholders of the implications of the investigations which led to shareholder losses of approximately 15%.
