Nonbank Fintech Companies Reporting Disruption to One-Stop Banking

Innovative banks and fintech companies are disrupting the traditional one-stop banking model; a 2016 report from Accenture says bank customers are purchasing low margin products but looking elsewhere for brokerage accounts, auto loans and home mortgages; in 2016 nonbank mortgage lenders reported a significant milestone with 51.4% of the market's loan issuance an increase from 9% in all of 2009; as the trend continues, banks will have to increasingly monitor customer activity and offer new products that match nonbank competition.  Source

Nordic Platform EstateGuru Launches in Lithuania

Company has closed their first investment in Lithuania last month; other countries of operation include Estonia and Latvia; CEO and Co-Founder Marek Partel stated: "Lithuanians are the third biggest community of investors at EstateGuru and now they have the chance to invest into loans closer to them and our international investor base have even more options for diversification. The burgeoning Lithuanian real estate market is stable and mature while small and medium sized businesses are still often underserved by the banking sector like in many other European countries. With businesses already familiar with the concept of P2P lending and have been utilizing this option for some time, this represents a ripe opportunity for EstateGuru to join."  Source

Noreika on National Bank Charters

Keith Noreika, the acting Comptroller of the Currency recently signed the first full-service de novo national bank charter since the financial crisis to Winter Park National Bank of Florida; Noreika believes there are still too few new banks and part of the problem is the onerous process; Noreika outlines the lengthy process and discusses his suggested changes in his testimony back in June. Northwestern Mutual Creates $50mn Venture Fund

Northwestern Mutual has formed Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures which will invest in fintech firms; according to the press release, the commitment will focus on innovation to build greater digital relevance for clients, increase data-driven decision making and create back-end efficiencies with the goal of creating value for its more than four million clients; investments will range from $500,000 to $3 million; the company has already seen benefits from the acquisition of LearnVest in 2015 and is looking to invest more in similar companies.  Source

Norway’s Global Government Pension Fund Proposing New Investment Guidelines

The Norway Global Government Pension Fund is cited as the world's largest sovereign wealth fund by assets; Fund managers have proposed some new changes to the investment guidelines for the Fund which has total assets of £723 billion ($898.27 billion); they are planning to increase the equity allocation threshold to 70% from 60%; the change would increase access to investments with higher returns during a time when fixed income investment yields are extremely low.  Source
