Oliver Wyman has published a report titled "Fintech In China: Hitting The Moving Target"; the report says when it comes to fintech, China could claim to be a world leader in some respects, in spite of an increasing number of voices questioning the health and legitimacy of the fintech business models; Oliver Wyman believes that technological advances, coupled with the unique circumstances of China's financial system, will propel fintech companies to further drive innovation and disrupt the traditional financial services space. The State Council's "Made in China 2025" initiative is seeking to transform China into a greater innovator of technology; the initiative seeks to capitalize on artificial intelligence, big data analytics and robotics and is being designated as a three-step national guideline; along with the initiative the country's State Council has identified 17 national-level innovation demonstration zones that will be allowed favorable policies in order to bolster their respective geographical strengths and support increased regional innovation. BBVA launched the "fintech games" in the search for the most innovative startups; the finalists for the Open Talent FinTech For Companies Challenge include Bitbond, Cardlife, RedCapital, B2Bpay, Akoni, PayBlocks, Asteria, Invoice Capture and MyFinB Holdings; the companies hail from countries all over the world and the competition closed on July 17; according to BBVA, "After eight years of focusing purely on seeking out the fintech firms that are transforming the Financial world, this year at BBVA Open Talent we are broadening the competition as we continue searching for talent and collaboration." Indian digital lender Capital Float is reportedly beginning a fundraising deal that would result in Rs 300 crore ($47 million) of new capital; the round is being led by Ribbit Capital and the firm is expecting a valuation of approximately Rs 1,300 crore ($203 million) following the deal; Capital Float plans to expand its lending portfolio to consumer lending and will also seek to finance kirana stores. Fintech Global provides the top ten deals for the quarter; financing from the top ten deals was $658 million and accounted for 84% of the sector's total financing; Chinese P2P lender Tuandaiwang was the quarter's financing leader obtaining $262.6 million and was the only Asian fintech company in the top ten; Europe reported the majority of top ten financings with five funding deals. Bank of America has filed over 20 blockchain and cryptocurrency-related patent applications since 2014; recent applications include the use of blockchain as a distributed database supporting the flow of certain actions; other patents involve the control of data, information verification, peer-to-peer payments and the protection of a generic cryptocurrency. A former SoFi employee has filed a California lawsuit; he is arguing that he was fired for reporting sexual harassment and has included in his court filing, allegations of impropriety in the handling of loans; source also reports that a broader class action lawsuit is being prepared on behalf of a group of mistreated employees.
