Paytm Tests Canada for International Expansion Plans

Paytm is looking to expand beyond their Indian roots and Canada is their first test case; “Paytm Canada is our beta test, or our warhead to get an entry into new geography beyond India,” said founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma to TearSheet; while their bill pay products help top build customers their big revenue driver is when businesses pay them fees to accept payments; the current test case in Canada has Paytm signing up thousands of Canadian companies where they incentivize customers to pay bills with cash back offers; having a large Indian population in Canada has helped the company gain early success, but expanding to markets like the US is a different type of challenge. Paytm’s High Hopes to Become World’s Largest Digital Bank

Paytm Payments Bank is aiming to have 500 million accounts offering a wide range of financial services products; the bank launched officially on Tuesday; they are unveiling their money market fund, launching a debit card and will have the capabilities for businesses to open up accounts. Source

PayU Colombia Using Mambu Banking Solution

According to Banking Technology, PayU will be implementing Mambu's software-as-a-service based core banking platform; the software will support PayU's short-term deferred payment product; Mambu now has 26 clients which it supports from its Miami office; PayU is currently running a pilot in Colombia but it is expected to roll out services across Latin America. PBoC Advisor Backs China’s ICO Ban

CoinDesk reports that Sheng Songcheng, counselor to the PBoC and an adjunct professor of economics and finance at the China Europe International Business School, explained that the Chinese government was right to move ahead with the ban; “In my opinion, these actions are largely aimed at averting risk and protecting investors’ interests while also being an opportunity to further regulate trading of virtual currencies,” as Songcheng writes in Caixin. PBoC Officials Visit San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank and Blockchain Companies

On August 23 and 24, officials from the People's Bank of China and scholars from Peking University arrived in San Francisco and had in-depth discussions with delegates at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco as well as some fintech companies including Coinbase, Prosper, Sofi, Circle and Ripple; discussion topics focused on digital currency, regtech, lending and inclusive finance; Sun Guofeng, the head of the Research Institute of PBoC, and Yao Qian, the head of Digital Currency Research Institute of PBoC, attended the tour; a report on the status quo of US fintech market, regulatory environment and its implications on China will be written after this visit. PBoC Requires All Online Transactions Clear Via New Platform

The People's Bank of China (PBoC) requires all third-party payment institutions to channel transactions through a newly established central clearing platform called Nets Union Clearing Corp. (Wanglian); the trial operations started in April and will be put to formal use on July 1, 2018; by that time, all third-party payment firms (including Alipay and TenPay), will not be able to conduct transactions, such as bank transfers, outside of regulator's supervision.
