Business Insider released the below chart this week highlighting what banks fear the most; for 2016, banks view existing large incumbents as their biggest threat followed by fintech startups; BI posits this is due to the incumbents having large customer bases and significant capital to fund projects; the perception of threats from fintechs increased from 14% in 2015 to 18% in 2016.
Financial Finesse writes about a gap that exists regarding women accruing retirement capital and gaining confidence in personal financial management; causes for the gap versus men include less comfort with traditional means of communicating financial products in-person and online; women (therefore) being more conservative with novel asset classes; as well as women living longer and requiring more savings; the article reports that "the bottom line is that women need to be saving more and at a faster pace than men to meet their retirement income needs."; their survey finds that only 20% of women feel the financial sector "truly hears their needs." The National Bank of Ukraine plans to use blockchain and distributed ledger technology in the country to move to a cashless economy; the bank's board has created a roadmap which includes plans to begin issuing e-money (the cashless payment instrument) no later than the fourth quarter of 2017; new payment method will compete with card payments. According to the WSJ, Goldman Sachs is in talks to offer financing on Apple products; this would be alternative to a consumer financing devices on a credit card; both companies didn’t comment on the story, but if a deal came together it could propel Goldman’s Marcus further into consumer finance.
