Mission based digital banking startup Varo Money secured their second significant round of the last two years by raising $45mn; investors in the round include The Rise Fund, led by U2 ‘s lead singer Bono, and Warburg Pincus who also helped to lead their first round; Varo applied for a national bank charter in July and plans to use the money for hiring, product development and marketing. State Street and the Alternative Investment Management Association have released a report on decreased liquidity in the investment market; approximately half of respondents see less market liquidity as a long-term factor and three-fifths of respondents are considering less trading liquidity in their investment strategies; report cites new market entrants, electronic platforms and peer-to-peer lending as reasons for increased illiquidity in the market overall; report says investors are focusing on three areas to adapt to the shift in market liquidity including rationalizing risk, optimizing for liquidity, and implementing new rules and tools. Coming up with a 20% down payment on a home can be quite a challenge, San Francisco based Unison is looking to offer help to these prospective buyers; a Unison deal typically involves the homebuyer putting down 10%, Unison putting down 10% and the remaining 80% would be borrowed; Unison charges a 2.5% fee and shares in 35% of future appreciation or depreciation; this allows for the homebuyers to keep payments lower and save on private mortgage insurance (PMI), which is required if the loan to value exceeds 80%; "We are partnering with the homeowners by investing alongside them in the house," Unison Co-CEO Jim Riccitelli told the San Francisco Chronicle; the Unison offering looks to replace local bay area assistance programs offered to lower income household and first time buyers. The statement provides considerations for main street investors and market professionals; investors should be aware of the risks of these types of investments which have less investor protections compared to the traditional securities market; to date no coin offerings have been registered by the SEC; the statement notes, “A change in the structure of a securities offering does not change the fundamental point that when a security is being offered, our securities laws must be followed.” Source
Savings rates at UK challenger banks are more than 1 percent higher than their high street counterparts; research by challenger Gatehouse Bank revealed the statistics; challenger banks and digital banks are still finding wide knowledge of open banking a challenge; “Sadly too many savers still opt for products from household names as they are unaware of the best buys that exist beyond the high street,“ said Charles Haresnape, CEO of Gatehouse Bank, to AltFi.
