Amazon Isn’t the Only Retailer Pushing into Financial Services

Amazon has been in the news lately for their continued push into banking related services but they are not the only ones making the push; TearSheet looks into three big name retailers also pushing their businesses into finance; Rakuten is Japan’s largest e-commerce site as their footprint includes video on demand, mobile messaging and they also operate the largest online bank in the country; Overstock.com has been building a marketplace for financial services named the FinancHub; two of the U.K.’s largest grocers, Sainsbury and Tesco, have opened banks via joint ventures. WeLab Raises $220mn in Series B

Hong Kong based mobile lender WeLab raised $220mn in a series B financing; investors in the round include Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund, CreditSuisse, the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC) and others; they plan to use the funds for improving credit technology and look to expand globally. Yirendai Announces Performance Bond Agreement with PICC P&C

The new agreement with PICC P&C would provide Yirendai with a performance bond for certain loans originated through their marketplace; PICC P&C agreed to reimburse investors should any losses occur because of due diligence issues; Yihan Fang, CEO of Yirendai, said, "We are pleased to begin working with PICC P&C on performance bond. We believe a strong alliance between our two industry-leading companies will enable us to provide higher quality products and services to our customers to better serve the large demand for personal finance."  Source

ShapeShift Reviews Listings after SEC Report on ICOs

The SEC's report on ICOs as securities has prompted ShapeShift to review the listings on its cryptocurrency exchange; ShapeShift will likely delist some of its traded listings and says it does not want to be characterized as a securities exchange; ShapeShift and its legal counsel will apply the Howey Test to the cryptocurrency listings which is the current market standard also used by the SEC for determining whether an offering is considered a security.
