Lending Club's CIO, Siddhartha Jajodia, sent a letter to investors on October 14 alerting them of an increase in interest rates; Lending Club says it will increase loan rates by a weighted average of 26 bps with rate changes mostly concentrated in the lower credit quality loan grades; the rate increase follows a previous weighted average interest rate increase of 135 basis points from November 2015 to June 2016; the rate increase is consistent with a lower credit quality trend observed from the platform’s borrowers as well as a higher trending rate environment in the US; additionally the firm also reported changes to credit policy standards and improvements to its collections efforts.
FastPay is an online lender and credit provider for digital businesses in the US and UK; the company has partnered with Hitachi Capital America Corp. for a new FastPay for Enterprise product; the new product will provide working capital loans of $10 million or more to digital media enterprises. CommondBond has expanded its loan offerings to include undergraduates; its products now include loans for undergraduate and graduate students, refinancing options for graduates and employer student loan benefits; its newly launched in-school loans have variable APRs starting at 2.87% and fixed APRs starting at 5.50%; they will also include a range of repayment options; in combination with the new loan offerings CommonBond will also partner with Pencils of Promise to support the educational funding of a child in need for every new loan funded on the platform; additionally, CommonBond has announced new online tools for comparing loans; the firm is also building out its employer student loan benefits product which involves integration with Gradible, which it acquired last year. A report from the Beijing Bureau of Financial Work says 90% of P2P platforms will struggle to stay in business in 2017; if their predictions are correct that would reduce the total number of P2P companies from 4,856 to approximately 500; companies will begin to undergo a review by regulators and it is expected that a run on deposits is likely to occur; regulators will be checking for a number of variables including two new requirements: the appointment of a custodian bank and full disclosure of the use of deposits; other factors under review will include risk management, business scale, IT infrastructure, investment sources and shareholders' credibility; firms will either be granted a P2P lending license or be required to liquidate; in 2016 the industry accounted for 800 billion yuan and according to the Beijing Bureau of Financial Work it is likely that 2017 will end drastically different for the industry overall. In an article from The Financial Brand they highlight the opportunity for banks and credit unions as millennials reach adulthood, warning that failing to crack the "millennial code" of what makes millennials unique may be fatal to lending opportunities; there are many promising statistics including an estimated 86 million potential millennial customers; according to the US Census Bureau, by 2028 millennials will become the majority of peak and legacy profit groups. Personal loans increased in Australia in March with credit card applications decreasing by approximately 4%; peer-to-peer personal loan borrowing is reportedly a factor driving personal loan applications which increased by 13.5% in March; according to the senior general manager of consumer products at Equifax, "The growth in personal loans has, in large part, been driven by newer lenders who cater to consumers' increasing demand for an online experience." This week, the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP) proposes improvements to the loosely-regulated fintech sector in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Kenya; CGAP is a global partnership of 34 leading organizations advancing financial inclusion; they note fintech companies may inappropriately publicize a borrower's personal information if they default on a loan, and others may sweep a user's social media data with minimal notice to the consumer; a key step, by law and proactive process, is to rigorously include all fintech platforms under existing laws for lenders in Kenya. 2016 could be the alternative finance industry's first net negative year according to AltFi; uncertainty in capital investment was a substantial factor for the first time causing a renewed focus on retail investment; CEO turnover has been a significant factor with Renaud Laplanche's resignation a catalyst for decreased investor confidence; regulators have also caused market uncertainty with new regulations potentially adding compliance burdens for alternative finance businesses; macroeconomic factors including Brexit and the US presidential election have also increased pressure on alternative finance; despite hardships, sentiment for 2017 is mostly positive with 2016 seen as only a temporary retrenchment.
