Lend Academy takes a retrospective look at the most important stories for the industry in 2016; regulation was a factor for the industry and 2016 included a white paper from the Treasury with consultation from seven federal agencies governing the financial services industry including the Securities and Exchange Commission, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency proposed its new fintech charter and the Marketplace Lending Association was formed as an advocate for the industry; other highlights included a $50 million investment in US P2P loans from Chinese marketplace lender CreditEase and a leading market position from SoFi.  Source

Orchard’s December 30 Marketplace Lending Snapshot

In Orchard's December 30 Weekly Snapshot it highlights reports from Even, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and American Banker; in online lending stocks, Square reported the highest monthly return, trading at $13.73 for a gain of 6.11%; in UK listed stocks, the VPC Specialty Lending Fund led monthly returns with a gain of 8.01%; in US listed marketplace lending funds, the River North Marketplace Lending Fund had a one month return of -0.87%.  Source

Prospect Marketplace Lending Corp. Files Form 40-APP for Multiple Share Classes

In October 2016, Prospect Marketplace Lending Corp. filed an N-8A and an N-2 indicating the company's investment status and plans for managing a closed-end fund investing 80% of the assets in marketplace lending investments; the firm has now filed a Form 40-APP; the Form 40-APP requests permission to offer multiple share classes, each with its own fee and expense structure.  Source

Chart of the Week: Market Share in Student Loan Debt

Currently the student loan debt market is at approximately $1.4 trillion; market share from government lenders has been on the rise under the Obama administration with federal student loans accounting for approximately 93% of the market versus 88% in 2008; in the Trump administration it is likely that private lenders will take a larger share as Republicans favor more financing options from private sector participants; since the November 8 election, shares of private lender Sallie Mae have increased 55%; marketplace lenders are also likely to take part in a market shift towards private student lending, specifically as their student loan offerings continue to expand.  Source

2016 Rating Agency Involvement in Marketplace Lending Transactions

The Securities and Exchange Commission's 2016 Annual Report on Nationally Recognized Statistical Rating Organizations (NRSROs) notes increased rating activity for marketplace lending; says smaller NRSROs have increased market share by rating marketplace lending securitizations; rating agencies issuing ratings for marketplace lending transactions included KBRA, Fitch, S&P, Moody's and DBRS; of the 28 rated marketplace lending transactions in 2016, DBRS rated 28.6%, KBRA rated 25.0%, Moody's rated 25.0%, Fitch rated 7.1% and S&P rated 3.6%.  Source

Increased home prices combined with available capital are supporting renewed interest in house flipping; the number of investors buying and selling a house within a few months has increased to the highest level since 2007; current investors are reporting an average profit of approximately $61,000; big banks are now more interested in financing real estate lending for house flipping deals and more online lending platforms are facilitating these investments; real estate crowdfunding companies seeing increased activity from house flipping customers include 5 Arch Funding, LendingHome Corp., Asset Avenue, Groundfloor Finance and Anchor Loans.  Source
