UK debt crowdfunding platform Property Crowd has announced the launch of its innovative finance individual savings account (IFISA); the minimum investment for the IFISA is 5,000 British pounds ($6,220) and the account will target returns of 7% to 10%; Property Crowd will compete for investment across the alternative debt market however its offerings vary slightly from traditional P2P lenders since the firm's debt products include structured real estate bonds. HSBC has announced a partnership with Tradeshift that will connect the Tradeshift network of companies to working capital lending at HSBC; Tradeshift has over 1.5 million companies on its platform; it offers HSBC the advantage of seeing the whole supply chain which can add insight for lending decisions; the partnership follows a significant investment in Tradeshift by HSBC last year; Business Insider also notes other fintech bank partnerships and the increasing interest from banks to partner with fintechs for innovative solutions. Jim Rosenthal will join the board of directors at OnDeck; he was previously the chief operating officer at Morgan Stanley and also served as chairman and CEO; according to OnDeck's CEO Noah Breslow: "Jim is a supremely talented executive whose vision contributed greatly to the success of Morgan Stanley and other organizations. Crowdfund Insider talks with Ron Suber about Prosper and marketplace lending in 2016; in 2016 the firm reported decreased investment and transaction fee revenue which led to a number of new initiatives and changes; in his comments Ron Suber cited the importance of being adaptable to change; he also talked about the investment opportunity from institutional investors and the importance of securitization and a secondary market; for 2017 he expects rapid changes for the industry to continue and hopes that as the industry evolves it will result in more opportunities for borrowers, online lending platforms and the ecosystem. Marketplace crowdfunding platform Lenderwize is reporting success as the first online lending and project financing platform for telecommunications businesses; the firm offers invoice financing, project financing and equity financing with rates of return averaging 6% to 14% annually; they recently surveyed telcos in the industry finding among other statistics a cash flow market opportunity of $22 billion; the platform now has $7.3 million in borrower requests and $10 million committed from institutional investors and six equity investors; it is also expecting new capital from business development presentations at TechFluence's Fintech Meets Telecom in Frankfurt and the Fintech Circle and AngelDen's Pitch in London. Solva, an ID Finance subsidiary that offers personal loans in Georgia, is now on the Mintos platform; Solva has disbursed 28,000 loans totaling EUR12 million ($14.3 million) since late 2016; Mintos provides a platform for retail investors to allocate to various online lenders; Boris Batine, ID Finance co-founder and CEO, stated: "Solva is an innovative product in global online lending. It was developed for prime clients and offers very attractive terms for personal loans. It closely resembles traditional bank loans, but with a focus on transparency, ease and convenience of service. Short term small business lender Kabbage raised a $250 million Series F round from Japan's SoftBank, bringing their total equity funding to $500 million; according to TechCrunch, Kabbage CEO Rob Frohwein says the funding will be used to expand their US footprint, launch more analytical tools, expand into the Asian market and add new products; when talking with TechCrunch before the round was public, Rob explained the thought process behind going into new products like payments; Frohwein says: "Look at how PayPal and Square have both gone from being payments companies to small business lenders. There is a clear connection between how companies think about those two business areas, so it's not a giant leap of faith for us to consider this." Source
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) works with the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) in the UK to protect investments for consumers; the FSCS is comparable to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in the US; the FCA is currently conducting research and undergoing consultation on the crowdfunding market; current consultation has involved communication between the FSCS and FCA on potential solutions for insuring funds; it's not likely that insured funds will be integrated into the FCA's new crowdfunding regulations however the two agencies are discussing options.
