Venture capital investment in marketplace lending is slowing as firms are struggling to become profitable; in 2015 venture capitalists invested $5.2 billion in 132 marketplace lending deals; in 2016 that total is down to $2.2 billion and 65 deals, according to a report from PitchBook Data; Moody's has also reported on a lack of profitability in the sector; with a key focus on achieving profitability it seems there are a few themes that will be important to watch in the industry including investor channels, unified methodology, capital usage, partnerships to increase demand and more reliance on institutional cash. Promise Financial was previously a marketplace lender focused on providing wedding loans; it issued loans of approximately $10,000 with interest rates up to 30%; in January the firm announced a change to its name and business model citing competitive pressures as the main reason for the shift in focus; it will now sell its technology as a service to banks and is in the process of changing its name to DigiFi. UK debt crowdfunding platform Property Crowd has announced the launch of its innovative finance individual savings account (IFISA); the minimum investment for the IFISA is 5,000 British pounds ($6,220) and the account will target returns of 7% to 10%; Property Crowd will compete for investment across the alternative debt market however its offerings vary slightly from traditional P2P lenders since the firm's debt products include structured real estate bonds. The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has granted full authorization to Proplend; the FCA continues to review authorization applications, primarily focusing on secured lending platforms; Proplend is a secured commercial real estate property P2P lender offering three tranches for investors; returns on the platform range from 5% to 12% with loans of 250,000 British pounds ($307,718) to 5,000,000 British pounds ($6,154,350); the platform has funded 11.5 million British pounds ($14.16 million) of loans since inception with zero defaults; it has plans to offer clients an innovative finance individual savings account however it will likely not be available until 2018. Leading marketplace lending platform, Prosper, has launched Credit Card Optimizer; the Credit Card Optimizer is an enhancement to the firm’s Prosper Daily app which was introduced in March 2016 as an aggregator for financial accounts; the Credit Card Optimizer will provide users with their credit card balances and payment notifications; also seeks to provide advice on credit card usage and includes features for managing credit cards by interest bearing balances. Today, Prosper appointed Usama Ashraf as its new CFO; Ashraf will also oversee the capital markets side of the business to bring in new investors; Ashraf has more than 18 years experience in corporate finance and capital markets; recent positions include being the deputy chief financial officer and treasurer at Annaly Capital Management and corporate treasurer at USAA; David Kimball, Prosper's CEO stated: "We're thrilled to have someone with Usama's experience and track record in finance and global capital markets join our team. Usama will be instrumental in bringing new institutional investors onto the Prosper platform, including banks, as we continue to grow the platform in 2017." Source
Prosper has announced it will be increasing rates on its high-quality loans and lowering the rate on its HR rated loans; as of March 2 rates will increase on loans rated AA, A and B with an increase of 60 bps, 50 bps and 20 bps respectively; interest rates on HR rated loans will decrease by 10 bps.
