UK based digital only bank, Atom Bank, raised more than $205mn from investors including BBVA; the new capital will help the bank further investment in technoloy and business capabilities; BBVA Chief executive Carlos Torres Vila tells the FT, “we are fully aligned with the vision of banking that Atom is pursuing, and the disruption it is already bringing to the UK financial services sector.” Source.
After launching as savings product two years ago the app only bank is approaching £1bn ($1.3bn) in deposits; after disclosing in March they were at 17,000 customers and over £500mn ($663mn) they have seen a significant acceleration in growth; they also reported growth in small business loan applications and mortgages. Anthony Thomson, Founder & Chairman of Atom Bank, is stepping down after the company completes their latest fundraising; Bridget Rosewell, current non executive director, will assume they role left by Anthony; Mr. Thomson started the digital bank in 2014, raised more than $350mn and has guided the company to a top 10 rating in KPMG’s fintech rankings; “Since having the idea for Atom bank in early 2012, it has gone from being a big idea disguised as a small bank to a big idea and a big bank,” said Thomson in a statement reported by AltFi.
