Orchard Platform’s Matt Burton Discusses China’s Fintech Industry

China represents 18.5% of the total world population and its business commerce has been growing rapidly; it also reports the four largest fintech unicorn valuations, Ant Financial, Lufax, JD Finance and Qufenqi; Matt Burton from Orchard Platform reports on these statistics and more in a recent blog post also highlighting the emphasis on mobile payments and technology services for the underbanked and unbanked; while China's fintech sector has shown exponential growth, the government is now increasing its focus on financial protection which is expected to improve the quality of fintech businesses; in the blog post, Burton also provides a list of companies he is watching by region in Asia.  Source

Patrick McHenry is one of the most proactive advocates for fintech in Congress; at LendIt USA 2017 he provided his insight from Congress on fintech and also spoke with Lend Academy in their podcast; his views are framing many of Washington D.C.'s legislative debates and his legislation, the Financial Services Innovation Act of 2016 (HR 6118), could be a significant factor helping to support future fintech innovation in the US.  Source

Mike Cagney Discusses SoFi and Its Business Growth

John Battelle, founder of Newco, talks with SoFi's Mike Cagney about the firm and its business growth; Cagney talks about the firm's customer commitment and the support customers receive over traditional banks; also reports on the verticals it has expanded to since starting the business with student loans; additionally Cagney provides some metrics on the business including that the company has $1 billion in equity on its balance sheet, $6 billion of lending capacity, $9.5 billion in loans for 2017 and estimates $18 to $20 billion in loan originations for 2018.  Source

Orca Unveils Standardized Data Platform for P2P Investment in UK

Citing increasing demand Orca has launched a new standardized investment platform that will be focused to financial advisers and broader P2P investors; Iain Niblock, CEO of Orca, stated, "Although P2P investments offer stable, predictable risk-adjusted returns and great diversification for investors, there has been virtually no uptake since financial advisers were permitted to suggest their clients consider P2P products last year."; the platform will focus on interest rates, default rates, subprime rates and a proprietary Orca scoring methodology.  Source

Innovate Finance Comments on Brexit Deliberations and Fintech

The UK has triggered Article 50 and the 27 European Union countries will now begin negotiating with the UK for new terms; Innovate Finance's Lawrence Wintermeyer provides comments on the effects on fintech; says Brexit will make it more challenging for the UK to attract global investment and talent; Wintermeyer also says Brexit could potentially create new opportunities for regtech which will become increasingly important in cross-border activities.  Source

Custodian Bank Services in China Evolving Slowly after Regulatory Requirement

The China Banking Regulatory Authority has mandated that all P2P lenders work with a custodian; a month after the requirement was announced, the majority of industry platforms have still not partnered with a custodian; most Chinese custodian banks do not offer P2P custodian services so the partnerships require added deliberation and communication; a number of new regulations are affecting the industry and it appears Chinese custodian banks will have a significant impact on the future of the industry given the online lenders they choose to partner with for P2P custodian services.  Source

BofI Holding, Inc. Reporting Share Price Losses Following Bankruptcy Court Filing

A bankruptcy court filing has caused the share price to drop for BofI however FBR is maintaining its outperform rating; BofI is a banking affiliate to online lender Quick Bridge who is the defendant in a court case in which a plaintiff in bankruptcy is seeking to annul its debt from the lender; the plaintiff is claiming the lending relationship violates state laws and that the loan is not valid.  Source

Yirendai Announces Performance Bond Agreement with PICC P&C

The new agreement with PICC P&C would provide Yirendai with a performance bond for certain loans originated through their marketplace; PICC P&C agreed to reimburse investors should any losses occur because of due diligence issues; Yihan Fang, CEO of Yirendai, said, "We are pleased to begin working with PICC P&C on performance bond. We believe a strong alliance between our two industry-leading companies will enable us to provide higher quality products and services to our customers to better serve the large demand for personal finance."  Source

BlackRock Increases Focus on Automated Investment Management

BlackRock's new investment management executive Mark Wiseman has reorganized the business with a greater focus on automated investing for its active funds; the changes will focus on the actively-managed equities business and include pricing changes and increased use of computer models for active investment funds; the firm's passive investments have helped it grow assets under management to $5.1 trillion however its active fund performance has lagged and in 2016 reported $275.1 billion invested, a decrease from $317.3 billion three years prior.  Source
