The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance has released its second report on the Asia Pacific region. Alternative finance volume totaled $245.28 billion in 2016, up from $103.31 billion in 2015; China continues to be a main driver for growth but other geographies continue to grow albeit off of smaller bases; further details about the region are outlined in the report. Personal financial management or PFM apps have become one of the hotter areas in fintech the last few years; but with more companies starting the competition has been steep and now banks are incorporating a lot of the same features within their mobile apps; TearSheet interviewed Jillian Williams of the Anthemis Group about the PFM market; the interview covers how hard it is to differentiate your product when so many similar firms are out there and why are companies still receiving investment from VC’s; other topics include banks offering a similar suite of products, whether or not robo-advisors will add PFM capabilities and what’s next for the market. UK based p2p lending platform RateSetter has halved their interest rate payout...
The OCC has filed a motion to dismiss in a court case filed by the CSBS suggesting that the agency is not authorized to issue the fintech charter it has been drafting to support the growth of fintech companies in the US; the primary argument of the CSBS centers around the issuance of a national charter to fintech companies offering only unbundled banking services with no deposit taking business; in its motion to dismiss the OCC says the CSBS' allegations are speculative given that the OCC has not yet begun taking any applications for a national charter. Perfios is an Indian fintech startup that has developed software products that help digital lenders, banks and financial institutions to analyze client data; the software can help reduce application times for loans, credit cards and insurance policies; the firm's $6.1 million fundraising was provided by New York-based venture capital firm Bessemer Venture Partners. The P2PFA has added Folk2Folk expanding its membership to nine; Folk2Folk is the only P2P lender in the UK to offer regional branch offices for customers to meet with representatives; the lending platform was authorized by the Financial Conduct Authority in December 2016; it is a secured property small business lender and has lent a total of approximately £134 million ($167.28 million) to small businesses. Funding Circle US has posted several job openings in their capital markets unit including a job posting for a head of US capital markets; Albert Periu, former global co-head of capital markets, has left the firm and become founder of Neptune Financial; according to Funding Circle, Sachin Patel is currently managing global capital markets and he is planning to create a US capital markets team similar to its UK counterpart.
