Data from Financial Technology Partners reports $36 billion in fintech financing in 2016; the funding was provided by over 1,700 investors through approximately 1,500 deals; banking and lending companies represented 29% of deals while the payments, loyalty and ecommerce category obtained 38% of the total funding. According to a new report by CB Insights global fintech funding reached $5.4bn across 323 deals in Q1 2018; deal activity was highest in the U.S. and Asia, Europe on the other hand fell to a five quarter low; early stage companies in Europe were not receiving investments, though later stage companies were still having success; regtech, wealth management and digital banking led the way, while online lenders lagged behind. According to a new research report by KPMG and CB Insights, the number of deals and total value of venture capital investment dropped in Q3 to $2.9 billion down from $9.4 billion in Q2; the report points out that the significant drop was due in large part to a $4.5 billion investment to Alipay owner Ant Financial in Q2; while Asia investment remains strong, UK investment was hurt due to Brexit uncertainty and the US market saw a decline due in large part to the presidential election; overall investment trends remain positive as the amount invested for 2016 is on track to surpass 2015. The number of global fintech patent filings has increased by 49% in the past five years; in 2016 there were 9,545 fintech patents filed globally; the US was the global leader in fintech patent filings with 4,523; China ranked second with approximately half of the number of filings as the US; data on the filings was compiled by commercial law firm EMW who reported that the increase was a result of more filings from both startups and traditional financial services firms.
