Japanese Banks Join BlockChain Consortium with Ripple

SBI Ripple Asia this summer announced plans for a Japanese blockchain development consortia; now, it says interest from banks has been so high that they are launching in November 2016 with 47 member banks, as opposed to an originally planned launch in March 2017 with 30 banks; the participants will be working first on a proof of concept for real-time remittance and cross-border payments; participants include Mizuho, Bank of Yokohama and SBI Sumishin Net Bank.  Source

Japanese Fintech Company MoneyForward IPO Expected in September

Tokyo-based fintech company MoneyForward could go public on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Mothers market by September; its market cap is expected to be JPY10 to 20 billion ($90 to $180 million); founded in 2012, MoneyForward is a personal financial management app which includes accounting functions, payroll service, statement collection, expense reporting, financial projections and the ability to send an invoice; MoneyForward has over four million individual users in Japan. Japan’s Move to Cashless Society

Japanese banks are looking at digital payments due to a recent regulatory change which may bring in more competition; the law will be introduced in phases which makes it easier for depositors to give third parties access to both their accounts and data; it is part of a government push to reduce high cash use in the country; Projects around QR codes, blockchain and digital currencies are currently in the works. JD Finance Establishes VC Fund Focusing on Early-Stage Projects in the Consumption Field

JD Finance has announced the establishment of a venture capital fund, called ThousandTree Capital, to invest in early-stage companies (angel or A round) in the consumption field; JD Finance will hold minor shares in the startups; the investment decision will be to some extent driven by the data accumulated in the JD ecosystem. JD.com Announces Partnership with Accelerator Plug and Play

Looking to broaden their presence in Silicon Valley the e-commerce firm JD.com partnered with accelerator Plug and Play; JD.com said it will share technologies like artificial intelligence, cloud and smart supply chain tech with the new program; they will look to focus on companies in robotics, AI, AR/VR and the cloud; “Partnering with Plug and Play, we hope to unlock the potential of the next generation of companies, and help them succeed both in the US and China,” JD’s chief strategy office Dr. Jianwen Liao told TechCrunch in a statement. JD.com Sells Finance Business

China e-commerce business JD.com has announced the sale of its finance business which is focused on payments and investments; company will sell JD Finance for 14.3 billion yuan ($2.1 billion) in cash while also retaining some share in its future profits; with the spinoff of JD Finance, JD.com's business structure will now be similar to the structure of competitor Alibaba who also focuses on e-commerce and has a stake in payments finance business Ant Financial.  Source

Jefferies and Lending Club Planning New Securitization

According to a report from GlobalCapital, Jefferies and Lending Club are partnering on a new securitization for Arcadia Funds; the portfolio is expected to include approximately $300 million of prime consumer loans from Lending Club.  Source

Jefferies Renews Loan Purchase Agreement with SMB Lender Bond Street

Jefferies has renewed their loan purchase agreement with small business lender Bond Street; deal expands loan purchases to as much as $300 million building on a $100 million commitment from mid-2015; Bond Street has also expanded their term product and now will make loans from $10,000 to $1 million; previous loans were between $50,000 to $500,000; investors in the company include Spark Capital, Homebrew as well as the co-founder of Airbnb and David Chang, chef and owner of momofoku.  Source
