SmartBiz is expanding its Small Business Administration (SBA) loan offerings to include a new online SBA commercial real estate loan; SmartBiz is an online marketplace providing small business owners with SBA loan financing options facilitated through banks; its new commercial real estate offering will include the SBA 7(a) commercial real estate loan. Branch CEO Matt Flannery is not new in the micro-lending lending space having previously co-founded Kiva; Flannery realized that there was much more potential in lending across the globe outside of the non-profit space; Branch has an app that uses information from the phone to score credit in places like Nigeria and Kenya; the Series B round was led by Trinity Ventures and included other big names such as Andreessen Horowitz and CreditEase Fintech investment fund; the company also secured a $50 million debt facility from Victory Park Capital. As of December 2016, shadow loans in China reported an annual increase of approximately 15% to 14.1 trillion yuan ($2.3 trillion); a study by UBS reports that as the market grows one area adding increased risk is regional banks, specifically banks located in China's Rust Belt region, which have been integrating the shadow loans into various methods for diversifying their balance sheet risk as the steel and metal-producing provinces struggle to remain profitable in the changing economy; the UBS report says alternative financial statement accounting regarding the loans could lead to a number of issues including overstated capital adequacy ratios, understated nonperforming loans and reduced provision charges.
