Ravi Menon, managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) spoke about the MAS completing their first blockchain pilot covering interbank payments; Menon stated, "The killer app is really to go cross-border. If we can make a blockchain-based system support payments from one country to another, that could be potentially transformative in bringing costs down."; he also spoke about the increasing understanding of fintech by CEOs of major banks and how the MAS supports partnerships between banks and fintechs. Patch Homes has officially launched after operating in private beta; the platform seeks to allow homeowners to greater utilize the equity in their homes; by offering investment versus a home equity loan, homeowners contract with Patch Homes for capital proceeds that can be used for any type of financing needs; Patch Homes then shares in the gains and losses on the home's value over the contracted timeframe; Patch Homes has identified a $4.5 trillion home equity market in the US; along with its launch it also announced $1 million in fundraising to support its growth and to expand its offering beyond California. Chris Larsen, Ripple’s co-founder and executive chairman is benefiting from Ripple’s (XRP) recent rise; CNBC reports that his net worth climbed to $59.9 billion yesterday, at least on paper; this puts him high on the Forbes 400 list, just head of Larry Ellison; Larsen owns 5.19 billion of the digital currency and has a 17% stake in the company; he was previously a founder of Prosper. When Tandem Bank acquired Harrod’s Bank in August there were three main reasons for the move; FT Alphaville reports Harrod’s had a banking license, the deal came with a $13.4mn capital injection to fund the company through to deal approval and an additional $107mn from existing investors. Source.

KPMG reports that fintech investment in Asia was $3.85bn in 2017, a significant drop from the more than $10bn invested in 2016; China was the biggest reason for the drop as the country saw only $1.3bn of investment in 2017; “Increasing government controls and regulations over fintech in China have kept many investors on the bench during 2017,” the report explained; one optimistic data point was corporate investment jumped in Q4 to 31 percent of overall deals. Square's CEO, Jack Dorsey, explained on this week's earnings call why he puts its subsidiary, Caviar, on a silver platter; Square's payment-handling service is used by many restaurants, while Caviar's food delivery-enabling platform allows those restaurants to reach a customer base eating at home; the key for Dorsey is cross-selling services that grow their customers' businesses, even if the synergies aren't apparent at first bite; on CNBC's Squawk Box the day after the earnings call, CTO Sarah Friar said that Square has been "executing on all cylinders."
