Funding Circle Inks Partnership with Aegon

UK small business lender Funding Circle formed a strategic partnership with the Dutch financial services firm Aegon; Aegon will look to fund about $205 million worth of loans in the first twelve months and then steadily increase that amount for the next three years; the deal helps to ease the gap left by the European Investment Bank who pulled back a $129 million commitment in the wake of the Brexit vote; Funding Circle CEO and Co-Founder Samir Desai explained to AltFi: "This partnership is validation of the attractive risk-adjusted returns that are being generated to investors by lending through Funding Circle. We hope our joint programme with Aegon will develop to deliver increased lending to UK small businesses over the coming years." Source

Fifth Third Bank and ApplePie Capital Enhance Partnership

Fifth Third Bank will fund loans on the platform and also receive platform borrower referrals; in December 2016, Fifth Third Bank participated in a $16.5 million Series B funding round supporting ApplePie Capital; the ApplePie Capital lending platform was established in January 2015 and specializes in loans to franchise businesses across the United States; it has partnered with over 60 franchise brands and financed over $100 million for franchise businesses. State of Minnesota Sues Online Lenders

Online lenders FIP, LLC and Future Income Payments, LLC are being sued by the State of Minnesota; the two lenders target seniors and veterans with pension advance loan products and charge exorbitant interest rates of approximately 200%; the interest rates significantly exceed Minnesota's usury cap of 8%; the court filings argue that the lenders are unregistered and unlicensed to offer loans in Minnesota. Indian Platform Capital Float Raises $45mn

The Series C round was led by Ribbit Capital; SAIF Partners, Sequoia India and Creation Investments Capital Management also participated; the company plans to expand lending, invest in products/technology and widen their geographical footprint; Capital Float will focus on loans to small merchants and kirana store owners; the company has raised $87 million and has about 15,000 customers in e-commerce, traditional retail, manufacturing as well as services businesses. RateSetter is Leaving the P2PFA

The Peer-to-Peer Finance Association (P2PFA) is a trade body representing three quarters of the P2P lending market in the UK; RateSetter has breached rules set by the P2PFA; according to RateSetter, "No customer has experienced any loss from our actions but we recognize that our actions breached the principles of the Association."; recently the company has been in the news with regards to their wholesale lending business that it has been winding down. Funding Circle Removes Manual Bidding from the Investment Process

UK Small business lender Funding Circle attempts to simplify the investment process by removing manual bidding in favor of a two tiered autobid process; the two autobid accounts will be: balanced with a targeted return of 7.5% and conservative with a targeted return of 4.8%; UK Managing Director James Meekings tells AltFi: "These changes will make lending at Funding Circle simpler, better, fairer. We want to create a level playing field for all investors and ensure everyone has the same opportunity to lend to UK businesses."; the changes were in response to individual investors "gaming" the system and not allowing the passive investors access to higher return loans which are very popular; according to AltFi this is a trend in in the industry with other platforms, including Zopa in May, moving to this process. Australian online lender SocietyOne is celebrating its fifth year in business with its first loan issued in August 2012; in June 2017 the platform reported cumulative originations of $300 million and since inception has helped over 13,000 customers; the firm says it has plans for expanding to new areas of lending over the long-term and will seek to obtain a 2% to 3% share of the $100 billion consumer finance market.
