CB Insights held a webinar discussing fintech trends in Europe; top trends included insurtech expansion, blockchain, open banking and the changing financial services infrastructure; reports that European fintech has raised $2.637 billion in 2017 from 300 deals with record financing in the first quarter of $1.1 billion. Investment funding deals for fintech businesses were lower in 2016, according to data from CB Insights; the firm reports that the number of deals remained steady with a 1% decrease to 836 however the total amount funded decreased by 13% to $12.7 billion in 2016; global instability and industry challenges in P2P lending were among the factors contributing to the lower investment. CB Insights provides a list of 189 global unicorns from its private market database; 91 companies are located outside of the US; globally by country, China ranks first in number of private market unicorns with 46; Lufax is the top P2P lender globally by valuation at $18.5 billion. Source

CB Insights has analyzed 1,098 startups which raised capital from 2008 to 2010; only 46% followed with a second funding round and 14% achieved a fourth round of funding; only 10 companies or 0.91% achieved unicorn status with a valuation of $1 billion and approximately 70% of the startups have failed. CBOE CEO Edward Tilly told the Financial News that recent criticism about bitcoin futures was “uncalled for”; “I think letters like that and cheap shots to our regulator, the CFTC, are uncalled for to make it seem this was an overnight self-certification without the proper amount of CFTC involvement,” explained Mr. Tilly; he explained that the Options Clearing Corporation clears the contracts for the CBOE and was comfortable with their decision of bitcoin. CB Insights details wealthtech exits from 2012 reporting a total of 29 exits with 28 mergers or acquisitions and one IPO from Yodlee; during the sample timeframe, TradeKing was active in the wealthtech market acquiring Zecco, GAIN Capital Securities, TraderOS and MB Trading before being acquired by Ally Financial; also active in wealthtech deals has been Envestnet who has acquired Yodlee, Wheelhouse Analytics, Finance Logix and Upside. The companies are grouped into 16 categories with total average fundraising from all 100 companies of $14 million; year to date ICO fundraising is at $1.5 billion with the top fundraisings from Filecoin and Tezos; in the US, most are falling within the SEC's definition of securities issuances, with the prevalent testing measure being the Howey Test. According to CB Insights, real estate tech received $2.6 billion in funding in 2016 across 277 deals; the category is broad including companies providing technology to brokers, investors, lenders, mortgage providers, property owners, managers and buyers; given current run-rates total volume for 2017 is expected to increase; notable financings include Homelink, PropTiger, Placester, Knock, OfferPad and Nested. The CBOE will launch bitcoin futures on Sunday December 10th and said that trading will be free for the first month; “We are committed to encouraging fairness and liquidity in the bitcoin market. To promote this, we will initially offer XBT futures trading for free,” commented Ed Tilly, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CBOE; CBOE’s bitcoin futures will trade on CFE un the ticker XBT.
