Professional Bank Services and Austin Associates have merged to form ProBank Austin with offices now in Louisville, KY, Nashville, TN and Toledo, OH; Professional Bank Services specializes in a range of risk management services for community banks including compliance, safety and soundness, audit and management consulting, as well as M&A advisory, also offering education and training to financial institutions, state banking associations and government agencies; Austin Associates provides consulting and investment banking services including M&A advisory, a variety of strategic planning services for stress testing and profitability analysis, and technology software solutions including the firm's LoanPricingPro software; the combination of the two firms will create one of the nation's most robust community bank consulting and investment banking firms. Promise Financial was previously a marketplace lender focused on providing wedding loans; it issued loans of approximately $10,000 with interest rates up to 30%; in January the firm announced a change to its name and business model citing competitive pressures as the main reason for the shift in focus; it will now sell its technology as a service to banks and is in the process of changing its name to DigiFi. Today, Prosper appointed Usama Ashraf as its new CFO; Ashraf will also oversee the capital markets side of the business to bring in new investors; Ashraf has more than 18 years experience in corporate finance and capital markets; recent positions include being the deputy chief financial officer and treasurer at Annaly Capital Management and corporate treasurer at USAA; David Kimball, Prosper's CEO stated: "We're thrilled to have someone with Usama's experience and track record in finance and global capital markets join our team. Usama will be instrumental in bringing new institutional investors onto the Prosper platform, including banks, as we continue to grow the platform in 2017." Source
Prosper filed its annual earnings report with the Securities and Exchange Commission showing an annual loss in 2016 of $118.7 million from revenue of $132.9 million; the loss compares to an annual loss of $26 million for 2015; 2016 was a challenging year for the industry overall; Prosper attributes the losses to lower loan volumes and higher restructuring and legal costs; in February, Prosper reported a $5 billion deal with a consortium of investors committing to invest in Prosper's loans over the next two years, which has helped to give the firm a much more positive outlook for 2017. In a letter to investors, Prosper has announced they are releasing their seventh generation credit model (PMI7) around December 20, 2016; Prosper also announced they are changing their credit bureau from Experian to TransUnion; according to Prosper, "Using TransUnion will allow us to leverage trended historical data on borrowers and make better underwriting decisions within the new credit model."; Prosper's rating system on loans from AA-HR will remain the same.
There is a worldwide problem in that not enough people have access to financial opportunity in underserved markets; at LendIt USA 2017 we hosted a panel that focused on impact investing and opportunities for the underserved in financial services; panelists discussed the size of the market, how technology has helped to close the gap and why they feel that investing with their hearts and wallets is the better way to go; the discussion talked through the difference between regular investing and impact investing, as well as what investors look for when an opportunity presents itself; technology has allowed for low to middle income families to have a better understanding of their daily financial health and to expect better services; the panel also touched on the risks involved in certain markets, how to assess potential investments in emerging markets and how the local regulatory bodies can play a role; looking at investments beyond the financial return has helped communities around the world and this looks to be a trend that is on the rise. In October 2016, Prospect Marketplace Lending Corp. filed an N-8A and an N-2 indicating the company's investment status and plans for managing a closed-end fund investing 80% of the assets in marketplace lending investments; the firm has now filed a Form 40-APP; the Form 40-APP requests permission to offer multiple share classes, each with its own fee and expense structure. Prosper has announced it will be increasing rates on its high-quality loans and lowering the rate on its HR rated loans; as of March 2 rates will increase on loans rated AA, A and B with an increase of 60 bps, 50 bps and 20 bps respectively; interest rates on HR rated loans will decrease by 10 bps. Global Debt Registry (GDR) has been steadily growing its business now announcing that Prosper will join the firm's verification network; by partnering with GDR, Prosper can enhance the reporting for its institutional investors; according to John Goldston, director of capital markets at Prosper, "GDR's eValidation and eVerify asset certainty tools fit easily into our existing data structures and processes, allowing our investors to seamlessly access GDR's enhanced verification and loan-level diligence services." In January, Prosper began using its new PMI7 credit underwriting model; Prosper expects PMI7 to help improve returns and credit scoring metrics; the estimated return on loans issued for January is 7.86%; post-charge off recoveries have been higher than estimated which is expected to increase IRR calculations; delinquencies and pre-payments are also improving; the average coupon increased 300 bps in January to 15.99% as PMI7 caused an increase in higher risk loans.
