SoFi Closes 12th ABS Deal of 2017

Online lender SoFi closed their 12th securities for $769mn of private student loan notes; total issuance in 2017 reached $6.9bn which was up from $4.2bn in 2016; the deal featured 38 investors and joint lead managers were Morgan Stanley, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs; SoFi is in the top ten of ABS issuance in 2017 as they continue to utilize the markets better than any other online lender. SoFi Completes Largest Consumer ABS Deal

SoFi completed a $727mn issuance, entitled SCLP 2017-6, which makes it the largest consumer ABS deal; this is SoFi’s 11th ABD deal in 2017 worth over $6bn; SoFi said the joint lead managers on SCLP 2017-6 were J.P. Morgan, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and Mizuho Securities. Source.

SoFi Cuts 5% of Its Workforce

According to the WSJ, SoFi is laying off around 65 employees in its mortgage division; these employees worked out of offices in Healdsburg, California and Cottonwood Heights, Utah; the company has about 1300 employees; according to SoFi, the company “made some changes to staffing to ensure we have the right people in the right roles and locations to power our growth.”; at the same time SoFi is looking to fill 175 jobs. SoFi originated $12.9 billion and sold more than $2 billion in loans in 2017; Ashish Jain, senior vice president of capital markets provides some insight into how hard the team worked to ensure their success in 2017 stating, “We were willing to do calls at any hour, to assure them the quality of product was high, and that there weren't any issues on these loans they were buying. Synovus and Citizens were among the banks that bought SoFi loans last year.”; Jain reports that all of their investors are still buying and they have brought in new investors after Mike Cagney left the company.
