German fintech Deposit Solutions has acquired Savedo; Savedo is also a startup in the fintech space and the two firms offer similar services; Deposit Solutions provides a deposit marketplace for savers allowing them to move funds among 15 European banks in order to achieve the highest rate of return; Savedo will help Deposit Solutions expand its offering by adding 13 new banking partners and integrating 18,000 new customers. Acting Comptroller of the Currency Keith Noreika spoke about the online lending industry, discussing the potential of companies taking deposits and seeking banking charters; he shared,"One way a maturing industry adapts to changing market conditions is to diversify its funding sources and expand into other sources that offer greater stability. As the industry matured, companies have found a balance that includes selling loans to retail and wholesale investors, securitizing loans, and even exploring the potential for deposits." The World Economic Forum has elevated its interest in blockchain technology by forming a working group featuring two dozen prominent executives and innovators; the group meets in Dubai for the first time this week; it will begin with issues of governance of the technology's direction and development protocols; members include the chief economist for the People's Bank of China's research group, the head of the Bank of England's fintech startup accelerator, the former President of Estonia and representatives from startups including BitPesa, Everledger, Ripple and Chain as well as Barclays and Deutsche Bank. The market for initial coin offerings (ICOs) has seen quite the rise in 2017 as investors have been pouring billions into blockchain based startups; these large fundraisings have been done without any real regulatory oversight until recently; in July the Securities and Exchange Commission issued a report stating that the offering by the company DAO was a securities offering; Chinese regulators issued statements over the past few months stating their intention to look at the market and this past weekend they deemed ICOs illegal in China; while companies have been able to secure vast amounts of capital there has also been increased cases of theft and fraud; the coming regulatory wave is sure to change how market participants act.
