Amazon has a number of clients using Alexa for financial advice and solutions architect Felix Candelario says, "Natural language processing is the new rocket science."; clients include UBS, LPL, Fidelity, Capital One and Betterment; overall, machine learning innovation is providing for new technology solutions and pairing it with voice automated interactions adds a new element of service for customers. Machine Learning Fintech Simility Raises $17.5mn

Simility, a machine learning adaptive fraud prevention product, raised $17.5mn from PayPal, The Valley Fund and Trinity Ventures; the company helps to prevent fraud and abuse in real time using machine learning and big data analytics; Rahul Pangam, Co-Founder and CEO of Simility, tells Crowdfund Insider, “Digital disruption in the financial and commerce sectors has resulted in the need for a fraud and risk management solution that goes beyond legacy.”; the company plans to build out data science teams and continue expanding globally. Machine Learning Solutions Rapidly Evolving in the Banking Industry

CNBC profiles three companies emerging in the banking industry with solutions built from machine learning technology; Digit has created a solution that integrates with a user's bank account to automate savings based on account balances and spending patterns; Zest Finance is offering credit scoring technology based on AI algorithms using alternative credit data; Adyen is also using machine learning for fraud prevention; overall machine learning solutions are evolving rapidly and speculators believe they will revolutionize the workforce; Goldman Sachs says machine learning and AI will enable $34 billion to $43 billion in annual cost savings and new revenue opportunities for the financial sector by 2025; it's also expected that AI and machine learning will begin to replace jobs that can be easily automated while also creating greater opportunities for software developers and data scientists.  Source

Madden v. Midland Ruling in New York

The US District Court for the Southern District of New York issued a decision in Madden v. Midland Funding, LLC; in determining whether New York or Delaware law governed the contractual relationship of the parties, the judge ruled that applying Delaware law would violate usury policies in New York which limit interest to 25% per year.  Source

Major UK Banks Unwilling to Promote Open Market

Banks have been given a deadline of early 2018 to comply with new regulations that will allow for open banking; many industry experts believe this deadline is too tight; to comply, banks would need to completely overhaul their current security infrastructure and banks are not known to rapidly change anything; the UK's big four - Lloyds Banking Group, HSBC, Barclays and Royal Bank of Scotland - control 77% of personal current accounts and 85% of business accounts; these new regulations will allow consumers to control access to their data and give them comparison tools to shop for the best mortgage, credit card or loan.  Source

Malls and Retail Store Commercial Mortgage Backed Securities at High Risk

Deutsche Bank has reported increased defaults in commercial mortgage backed bonds tied to malls and retail stores that they underwrote in 2012 and 2013; the bank is suggesting investors short the BBB- rated portion of the 2012 Markit CMBX price index, known as the series 6, which they say is tied to these investments; their analysis sees these bonds with pre-crisis attributes which successful investors shorted to avoid losses.  Source

Mambu Launches Digital Marketplace

Mambu has launched a digital marketplace to offer cloud based apps, products and tools for banking; the company will allow for integrations to be done locally or globally; Ben Goldin, Mambu’s head of product and technology, tells Banking Technology, “the marketplace provides an opportunity to present their offerings to institutions and influencers with the Mambu engine powering a composable architecture”; current partners include Onfido, Form3, nCino, Avoka and Experian.
