Bloomberg Intelligence provides insight on Asia's fintech market in 2017; in internet finance Alibaba and Tencent have a strong market position with high barriers to entry set for the growing market; blockchain is expected to remain at the forefront of fintech development with use in online money transfers, electronic payments, banking and internet finance; insurtech will also be important with technology focused on sales distribution, product development and client engagement; data tracking, artificial intelligence and internet of things technology are also expected to be factors for insurtech. Marcus by Goldman Sachs announced it had bought PFM app Clarity Money, their 16th fintech acquisition in the past three years; the company is looking to create a digital storefront for the Marcus brand; Marcus believes the acquisition will help it to give them a competitive advantage and build revenue. Peer-to-peer platform Octopus Choice is estimating GBP50 million ($64.08 million) in loans in its first year of business; the platform offers loans secured on residential property with average returns of 4.2% and loan to value ratios of up to 70%; the firm's loans have ranged from GBP95,000 ($121,744) to more than GBP5 million ($6.41 million); the firm has been fully authorized by the FCA and has received its HMRC approval to offer an IFISA. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has cited fintech as a risk for traditional banks in its "Semiannual Risk Perspective for Fall 2016"; the semiannual OCC report discusses risks for national banks and federal savings associations with data through June 30, 2016; says strategic planning is important for banking innovation and that banks who do not innovate to meet evolving needs may be at a competitive disadvantage.
