AutoFi has raised $10 million from a Series A fundraising and has plans to expand its auto lending technology services; the platform currently allows auto dealers to sell cars online, connecting buyers with lenders; it will add vehicle leasing options for customers; it is also expanding its services to Canada through a new partnership with Tricor Automotive Group. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) works with the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) in the UK to protect investments for consumers; the FSCS is comparable to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in the US; the FCA is currently conducting research and undergoing consultation on the crowdfunding market; current consultation has involved communication between the FSCS and FCA on potential solutions for insuring funds; it's not likely that insured funds will be integrated into the FCA's new crowdfunding regulations however the two agencies are discussing options. P2P-Banking.com has released international lending volumes for July; Zopa topped the list with originations of EUR119.6 million ($USD141.9 million) for the month; report includes a number of milestones including cumulative lending of GBP2.5 billion ($3.28 billion) for Zopa and GBP2 billion ($2.63 billion) for RateSetter; the report does not include data from US P2P lending platforms. The complaint stated that LendingClub violated federal laws which protect consumers from unfair and deceptive practices; LendingClub stock price dropped on the news which related to LendingClub’s promise of no hidden fees and a statement to applicants that “Investors Have Backed Your Loan” even though borrowers may not have been approved; some borrowers also experienced overdraft fees when LendingClub withdrew double payments according to the complaint. LendingClub responded to the complaint by issuing a press release. Source
CB Insights has released a market report on artificial intelligence; the report includes the market landscape, market statistics and an outlook for future growth; in the first quarter of 2017 the sector reported 30 artificial intelligence deals in fintech and insurtech with 48% of the deals by seed or angel investors; other highlights include $14.9 billion in equity funding from 2,250 deals since 2012, over 200 artificial intelligence acquisitions since 2012 and 11 artificial intelligence acquisitions by Google. Bill Miller discusses his $154 million hedge fund MVP 1 and its 30% allocation to bitcoin in a Wall Street Journal article; the fund is up 72.5% this year and according to a letter to investors the fund paid an average price of $350 per bitcoin; while his fund has done well he is aware of the risks that bitcoin could go to zero, providing his perspective in the article.
