Dianrong and FnConn have launched Chained Finance, a blockchain lending platform for supply chain companies; according to Soul Htite, founder and CEO of Dianrong, "Chained Finance creates a unique ecosystem that will provide supply chains with easier access to funding at competitive rates."; the companies report the platform could triple financing access for supply chain companies. Thomas Peterffy, CEO of Interactive Brokers Group, sent a letter to the CME and OCC Clearing Members voicing concerns about bitcoin futures; Mr. Peterffy believes bitcoin price movements are too big and arbitrary; he would prefer to put the clearing of bitcoin into an isolated clearing house or another isolated entity; he is sounding the alarm because he does not want to see the repeated mistakes of the 2008 financial crisis. Patrick McHenry is working with a Senate Democrat on a bill for fintech beta testing; he introduced the Financial Innovation Act in the House of Representatives in 2016 which did not advance; the Financial Innovation Act included the creation of innovation offices with 12 regulatory agencies; he says the 2017 version of the act will include "significant changes and revisions"; he plans to introduce the new bill in two months. National Public Radio has surveyed research on the impact of micro-lending to entrepreneurs around the world; in a number of well-controlled studies, the finding was that the loans were used to expand businesses, but the expansions were modest even by local measures and in none of the studies did the average borrower end up significantly increasing their income; micro-loans did have other benefits such as debt consolidation; one MIT economist, Abhijit Banerjee, found that straight cash grants to global entrepreneurs with low incomes did have a significant effect on long-term income generation, and hypothesized that the strict repayment structure of microfinance might be limiting its potential; the average microloan size is $200 in South Asia and $3,000 in Eastern Europe. Commercial real estate marketplace lending platform Money 360 originated loans of $35.6 million in December; the bridge loans ranged from $2.5 million to $12.5 million with durations between one and two years; according to Founder and CEO Evan Gentry, the firm expects momentum to continue in 2017 with performance from the platform a factor of increased demand from borrowers and investors for commercial real estate financing. SmartFunding has raised S$700,000 in a seed funding round led by Fintech Asia Group; the firm is marketing 20% to 30% annual returns for invoice financing investors; the invoice financing business seeks to capitalize on the Singapore market's small and medium-enterprise businesses which account for half of Singapore's GDP and approximately 70% of the country's jobs.
